Title: It’s Like Losing a Lover
Fandom: RENT (filmverse)
Claim: General
Prompt: 1-Unexpected news
Pairing: Maureen x April, background Roger x April, sort of Mark x Maureen
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Pre-film. She thought it would be April at the door, not Mark. Especially not Mark with tears in his eyes.
Maureen was expecting her early that morning. She preferred afternoon delights or midnight rendezvous personally, but Roger was a late sleeper, so April felt it was safer to sneak around in the morning. Usually, Maureen wanted it her way or the highway, but since fooling around with Roger’s girl felt like having an affair with a sister-in-law or something, she allowed this one exception.
When morning came and went, Maureen figured April was playing with her. April liked it when Maureen a little angry, a little rough. Maureen just liked the way April apologized: head thrown back, fiery hair all wild and falling into her open mouth.
But when the knock at her door came, she didn’t open it to find April, arms crossed and lips a-smirk. She found Mark, his hair unkempt and clothes askew, and crying.
“What’s wrong, pookie?” She asked, arms opening out to him on instinct.
“It’s April,” he said, and her arms fell. “She-collapsed. We took her to the hospital. Roger carried her.” He inhaled sharply and Maureen almost reached out to touch him, but something cold and horrible was happening to her heart and she had to hug herself instead. “She-oh god.” He closed his eyes and tears welled up behind the lenses of his glasses. “She didn’t make it.”
The loud sob escaped her throat before she even knew it had been building up inside of her. Her body shuddered uncontrollably and even Mark’s arms suddenly around her didn’t quell the trembling.
“I know,” he said, voice hoarse, into her hair. “I know. God. It’s like losing a-a-”
“A lover,” she whispered, letting him pull her closer, unable to care when her nose pressed into his shoulder.
“Yeah,” he agreed, nodding faintly. “Exactly.”
And she sobbed again, hard, because he really had no idea.
