"I'm sorry," she said quickly, as he set down the tea and sprinted to hold her hair back. "I don't know what came--retch--over me--retch--it's not your fault, really!"
"It's fine, Kaoru, that it is," he said quietly, something niggling at him. It couldn't be...it was just the flu, right?
But she had been fine last night... a voice in the back of his head taunted. Kenshin blushed furiously.

When she was finished dry-heaving ten minutes later, Kenshin picked Kaoru up and carried her to their room. "You should go to bed if you're sick," he said, still not sure but he wasn't sure if he could face the other possibility.
"Kenshin-"
He cut her off with two fingers to her lips and she sighed under his hand.
He tucked her into bed, wrapping her in one of his old gi, her favorite one of his.
"Kenshin, I'm fine!"
"You just threw up everything in your stomach and then some, Kaoru-dono," he said firmly.
"Yeah, well..." she blushed prettily and looked away.
“What?”
"Kenshin, I think I'm pregnant-mmph!"

There was a doctor's appointment, naturally, a highly embarassing check-up with Oguni-sensei and Kenshin present and then a rather public display of affection that was greeted with applause.
That night they curled up under the sheets like little children, Kenshin exploring her bare stomach with calloused hands.
"A girl," he said quietly. "I think it will be a girl."
Kaoru blinked wide eyes at him. "Are you sure?"
He smiled. "Mm, I am."
She lifted an eyebrow. "Oh. And you know how?"
He shrugged. "I just...do."
She nodded. "Okay, then." And then she grinned. "But it will be a boy, you know."
Kenshin raised an eyebrow. "This one will challenge that, that he will."
"And just how are you going to do that?"
"Wouldn't you like to know?"
"Kenshin!"
