“We can’t just let them fend for themselves.”
“They aren’t Ministry officials. We can barely care for our own, much less a couple of kids stupid enough to have a baby in this time.”
“James and Lily are two of the most mature--”
“What sort of life is that for a baby? On the run, growing up thinking someone’s going to kill them all the time.”
“At least he’d be growing up.”
“We did the same for the Longbottoms.”
“Frank and Alice are… were Aurors. We have a duty to protect them.”
“You have a duty to protect all wizards and witches, regardless if they are in your employ.”
“We can’t spare anyone.”
“And… all of our safe houses are compromised now, thanks to Rookwood.”
“A family is in need of your services, Minister, and you’re just going to stand there and let them fend for themselves? I have no doubt in Lily and James’s dueling abilities but Harry is a three week old baby. Do you want that on your conscious?”
“People die everyday and there is no guarantee that You-Know-Who will even go after the Potters.”
“And there are always other alternatives to Ministry protection.”
Lily looked up at her husband when he placed a hand on her shoulder, a forced smile on her face. “I never thought Sirius or Moody cared that much about us,” she murmured, trying desperately to bring humor into a very non-humorous situation.
James gave her a sardonic look, moving his hand down to rest on the hair of his son lying asleep in his mother’s arms. “You know Moody, adores the brat like no other,” he answered, returning her joke.
She laughed and rest her cheek against his arm. “You know what we have to do,” she murmured. “I don’t like it, but it’s the best shot we have. For Harry.”
He nodded in response, ruffling Harry’s hair before withdrawing his hand and arm from the only family he had left anymore. He trusted the old man, he really did, but a plan that included going into hiding, his son protected only by a charm that could be betrayed at any second by a Secret Keeper, didn’t sit well with him.
“Dumbledore,” James said, coming up along side his former headmaster, eyes flicking towards the still arguing Order members for a moment. “Lily and I want to try your plan. We think that it’ll be the safest for Harry.”
Dumbledore smiled, a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. He’d caught the significance of James’s words. “I won’t tell anyone, James,” he replied. “I promise.”
James shook his head, refusing the offer of Secret Keeper duty with that one gesture. “I want Sirius to do it.”
“James--”
“Please,” James looked his mentor in the eye, and in that one glance, the teacher realized exactly how scared his former pupil was. “I want Sirius to do it,” he repeated.
It didn’t sit well with him. There was something off about the plan now, but Dumbledore nodded his agreement anyway.
