Sleepless Night
It was a night just like the rest of them, about a week after that kiss on the cheek that had caused her sleepless night. It had actually been 6 days. But who was counting? It would be seven at midnight. It was almost that time now. It was almost midnight and he was still sitting on the other end of her sofa. They were still talking. They talked about anything and everything because with him she was so comfortable, and that brought them so much closer. Temperance would even say it brought them dangerously close.
The familiarity of his ‘It’s getting late. I should go home.’ caused a warm feeling to wash over her. Another sleepless night for Temperance Brennan? She was almost certain of it. And nothing had even happened yet. He wasn’t even gone.
The knot of anticipation that was beginning to grow in her stomach tightened when he bid her goodnight. What was going on with her lately? She didn’t understand.
Then, he turned to face her and she was surprised, but she didn’t let it show. This wasn’t what usually happened. He usually stepped outside after he said goodnight. Why was he breaking that routine? The knot tightened even more. The same look was there, the same look that she couldn’t decipher to save her life. When he blinked this time, it didn’t disappear. Her stomach flip-flopped. It was surely the alcohol they had consumed that was causing the sensations she was feeling because she had no other logical explanation for it.
Before she knew what was going on, his lips were on hers and her eyes had fluttered closed. It was a chaste kiss, but no kiss had ever stolen her breath like this one. What was he doing to her? Then, just like that his lips were gone and she was fighting the urge to sigh. He quietly said goodnight again, and before she had the chance to ask him to stay or ask him why, he was gone. She sighed and closed the door behind him.
Sleepless night indeed.
