I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter

Sometimes Sam thinks that he fell in love with Jess because of her pancakes. She made the best chocolate chip pancakes ever, and it wasn’t unsual for him to finish off a whole plate of them for breakfast. But now, they tasted heavy and sickly sweet in his mouth, and he forced himself to chew and swallow, eyes fixed on the headline. He licked his lips, and reached out to trace the words with one shaking finger. He read the article quickly, words jumping out at him-head missing, no suspects, no evidence, police baffled, any information call-and he shivered.

A hand landed on his shoulder, startling him so much he jumped, and Jess giggled at him. He tried to smile, but knew it was shaky and weak, so he mumbled some excuse and fled to the bathroom, looking the door and sinking to the floor.

It wasn’t his problem, wasn’t his job, not anymore. He gave up that life, he was just a college student now. He worked part-time in a garage and pulled all-nighters. He didn’t investigate weird deaths, he didn’t hunt supernatural creatures, he didn’t.

Maybe if he told himself that often enough, he’d start to believe it.
