The students excitedly moved into their pairs for the next phase of the class. We were going to learn how to make objects fly.
I demonstrated the charm for the class by making Rio, Harry's pet snake zoom around the classroom as Professor Flitwick had once done with Trevor, the toad.
"Remember you must say the words to the charm clearly, and with proper inflection. Wingardium Leviosa! And of course, don't forget to use the wand movement we worked on last week - swish and flick." I smiled as the memories of my first class came rushing back to me.
"You're saying it wrong," I snapped at Ron. "It's Wing-gar-dium Levi-o-sa, make the 'gar' nice and long."
"You do it, then, if you're so clever," Ron snarled.
I rolled up my sleeves, my thoughts following my wand movement as I pointed it at the feather in front of me ~swish and flick~ and said, "Wingardium Leviosa!"
It rose, the feather defied gravity and was born upwards as if carried by an unseen wind. My heart followed it. I had been excited and apprehensive when I received my Hogwarts Letter. I was anxious when I boarded the train at Kings Cross. I had been in awe since I first set eyes on the Castle that would become more like home to me than any place I could ever imagine. But that was the moment when I first truly felt like a witch. That one sweet and brief moment when I finally felt like I belonged.
A sharp intake of breath brought my mind firmly back to the present. The first feather had found it's way into the air. I smiled at the fierce concentration in those heart-stopping green eyes. This time the feeling was different, but no less intense. This time I felt pride, and I couldn't wait to get to the Great Hall for lunch to tell Harry.
"Very nicely done, Miss Potter, 10 points to Gryffindor." Her eyes shone and I saw her mouth Thank you Mum, and for the first time in years the magic that had become so common place to me felt new again, in my daughter's eyes.
