Funny how this quiet moment seemed to make it all worth it.

The insanity that Ranma seemed to draw to him like a moth to flames kept him busy, but there were times he resented it. He got tired of the yelling, and tired of the fierce passions that would provoke his fiancees and rivals at the drop of a hat. The only thing he liked were the actual fights, since it gave him a chance to improve his skills.

It would only be a matter of minutes before some new crisis managed to develop, since that was the way his life worked, but for now he would enjoy the peace. Sitting on the roof, he folded his hands back behind his head, staring at the night sky. Ranma liked to look at the stars, because they expected nothing of him. He had no promises he had to keep to them.

He heard her footsteps long before she arrived. Sitting up, he turned his head to watch her come. She moved gracefully against the night sky, though he would never tell her that. She might think he was being a pervert or something.

"Can I sit here?" Akane asked, uncharacteristically hesitant. She was in one of her shy moods, and looked almost beautiful in the dim light. There was no anger in her, and he wished that was always the case. She was cute when she smiled.

He hitched over to make a place for her, and she sat down, leaning her head against his shoulder. "Do you see the Big Dipper?" she asked.

Smiling, he pointed it out for her. "Orion's prettier tonight," and he moved his hand to indicate the configuration of stars. She murmured something in appreciation, and the conversation trickled away to comfortable silence.

She was warm against his side, and he dared to wrap an arm around her shoulders. She didn't say anything, and he let himself relax. He didn't know what love was, but maybe this came close.
