The trick to making tea was not only in selecting a good blend, but also knowing exactly how long to brew it. D winced inside every time Leon offered to prepare some, knowing he'd let it sit too long to be truly palatable.

It didn't explain why he was sitting across from Leon, holding a cup of poorly made tea, smiling like he didn't notice anything wrong. Leon was speaking about his latest drug bust, trying to drop hints that he thought D was involved and maybe pry something out of the Count.

D thought it quaint. Leon had never managed to get any information before, but hope apparently did spring eternal.

"-so the guy had a parakeet in his office, and I swear the bird was staring at me. You sure you know nothing about it?" Leon asked, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees, ready to pounce at the least provocation. He reminded D of one of his larger cats, his blue eyes fixed on his prey.

Playing with the detective's mind was one of D's favorite hobbies. Leon was convinced D was behind every nefarious thing that happened in the city. This time D really wasn't involved, but there was no way Leon would believe that.

"I'm afraid I've never met the gentlemen in question," D said smoothly, reaching out a hand tipped with long, clawlike fingernails to daintily select another treat. Leon had brought chocolates today, a good European import that was rich with cocoa, not like the stuff Americans ate. "Did you happen to remember to have someone look after the bird?"

Leon's eyebrow twitched in that delightful fashion that D was always pleased to provoke. "You're concerned about a bird?" Leon asked, his voice sharp with displeasure. "The guy's drugs killed seven people, and you're asking me about a parakeet?"

It was hard to keep the surge of disappointment he felt off his face. Sometimes Leon would act compassionate for his pets, but that was always washed away whenever Leon reminded D how human he was. He didn't care for his world; he didn't care for anything except his own species.

"It's a living creature as well," D pointed out mildly, keeping the words he really wanted to say at bay.

"Yeah, well... I wonder about you," Leon finally huffed, before picking up his drink. The cup looked ridiculously delicate in his huge hand, like something from a child's tea set. He tossed it back, his face flushed with annoyance.

"Now, Detective, that's not the proper way to drink tea. It is something to be savored," D chided, setting his own cup gently into the saucer. Leon was such a crude creature, his mannerless behavior grating on D's every nerve. It was hard to maintain his amused smile sometimes, but he advised himself that patience was wisest.

"Sorry," Leon muttered, sounding not the least bit repentant. He picked up the teapot and gave himself a refill, before taking his cup and sipping at it with a bit more grace. "I'll call the station and make sure the bird's delivered here."

D smiled at him, acknowledging Leon's efforts. Just when he's decided he should remember his real purpose and throw the human out of his life, Leon makes some subtle gesture that reminded D why he bothered.

Leon was the epitome of mankind, and D hated him for it. Leon embodied both the best and worst of humanity, and D couldn't stop loving him because of that.
