Slowly, Dana follows Doggett down the hospital hall. She feels strange and can’t quite put her finger on the cause for it.
She’s relieved that he’s okay. She doesn’t know what she would’ve done if it’d be different. She feels responsible and she was worried for him.
But that’s not why she’s feeling that uncomfortable. It was something he said earlier; about them being a good team.
The way he looked at her as he said it, almost scared her
Of course, she wants to have a partner she could rely on (and vice versa).
Of course, she needs someone who trusts her and her instincts.
But can she trust him?
She knows she has to.
Trusting Doggett was essential for her work as an agent and important for her life (and for her unborn child’s life)
She needs to trust him. But she can’t.
It would feel as if she’s giving up on Mulder; giving up hope that he is still alive and that he, one day, could return to her. And that thought alone was enough to leave her as uncomfortable as she is now.
Doggett isn’t Mulder and he will never be. She’d make sure of that.
