Smirk is part of an installation about three blocks from my house - across the street from my big box drug store, actually. The artist who built it and keeps expanding it has turned his house into this...this...whatever it is. He calls it The Magic Garden and has started charging to enter it. This pic shows the wall that faces South Street and my drug store but is only a part of it.
I think I remember their featuring this guy on some program some time ago, life as art. I'd love it if you took a couple more, this is so much cooler than anything we have around here, what beautiful madness.
I suspect that the proud father is probably an illegal immigrant. I took the picture in a two block stretch near me that used to be one boarded-up and falling apart store front after another. Now it's the thriving heart of a new Mexican community. All the signage is in Spanish and English with the word "Mexicana" frequently shining in neon. The store owners may be here illegally, but I'm sure they are paying Philadelphia business, real estate, and sales taxes. Me, it makes me happy to see a couple of near-slum blocks thriving. /rant

I'll post a couple of more pics after I get a chance to go by there, probably sometime over the weekend, depending on the weather. FanSee
