Confidence Part One

“The body was dismembered and scattered across a field, where it was eaten and torn apart by-” Brennan is interrupted by Booth’s blatant cough.

Brennan stops. The grief-stricken woman sitting across from her doesn’t notice as she is still trying to understand what she has just been told. Brennan does, and she knows what it means, too.

Sighing, she amends “We’re very sorry for your loss.”

Sometimes she thinks she’ll never get it right. It’s just something she’ll never be able to do. It’s always just beyond her reach but she can never seem to grasp it completely.

And Booth is always there to remind her of it. She’s just not good with people. Usually he just coughs or clears his throat. And usually that is all it takes to let her know that she’s failed again. However she hasn’t failed to give people the impression that she is cold, aloof and unfeeling.

This isn’t her, and it’s not how she wants people to see her either, but she doesn’t know how else to do her job without distancing herself. She would never be able to keep her objectivity if she called the victim by name or saw faces instead of bones.

And now, after distancing herself so much, she finds that she has little confidence when it comes to reaching out to others. She’s been trying. Especially since she met Booth she’s been making that extra effort to connect.

But it’s still not good enough, and he’s diminishing her confidence with each cough or sarcastic remark that he makes. And she can’t deny that it hurts the most coming so bluntly from him.

And all she’s ever done is care.
