'There would be no danger.' Jim used those words when he told Blair about the stakeout. Blair actually believed what Jim said. A foolish belief, as it turned out later.

Now, Blair sat at the bedside of his friend, wondering if Jim was going to recover. Shot three times, Jim was on life support. There had been no sign of regaining consciousness. It had been four days.

No danger? Blair should have known better. There was always danger associated with Jim's job. Blair knew that, he had seen it first hand.

Blair looked up at the clock -- it was getting late and he promised the doctor he'd go home to get some rest. He stood up from his chair, leaning over the bed to speak to the unconscious man.

"I've got to go, Jim. I promised the doctor I would. I thought you'd come to before now. I'll be back later. You know I'll never leave you. I'll always be by your side."

Blair touched Jim's forehead before he turned to leave. He left the hospital room, telling the nurses to call him if there was any change.

As he drove home, he thought about all the danger associated with Jim's job and profession. Blair knew he'd always be a part of it all, he knew his place was at Jim's side.
