For the Best
They were always in each other’s faces. Always in the other’s personal space. But now it was so much different.
Their faces were incredibly close, his breath on her face, his lips a whisper away from hers. Suddenly, his hand was on her cheek, his thumb on the very corner of her mouth. Her breath caught in her throat. She knew exactly what was coming. Exactly what he was silently asking for. The space between them was pregnant with tension.
She wondered why he hadn’t closed the gap between them yet. Then the weight of her next realization made her freeze. He was waiting for her. He wanted her to feel comfortable taking that last step. She looked in his eyes and saw hope and warmth and suddenly she felt like she could never be enough for him. He was a great man, and he deserved so much better than her.
She tried to apologize with her eyes. Words failed her. It was all too much. Then, before she could think too much or change her mind she turned her face away from his and the moment was broken. Booth leaned back into his seat, with slumped shoulders and a heavy sigh. She couldn’t bring herself to look at him, knowing that it was her fault.
When he got up and left she was silent. She didn’t even try to stop him. She only tried to convince herself that it was for the best.
