Revived Christmas Traditions

“So Bones, what are you doing this Christmas?” Booth inquired cheerfully. Brennan rolled her eyes. Hadn’t he already asked her this question half a dozen times already today?

“I told you. I don’t do Christmas. You know this, and you know why.” She replied sternly.

“I know. But you’re missing out. I’m not going to let you be the Christmas Killer again this year.” She ignored his comment and did not break her concentration on the set of remains she was working on.

“You know Bones, every year on Christmas Eve just before Parker goes to bed for the night, I read him The Night Before Christmas. He loves it. It’s our special Christmas tradition.” He paused and she ignored him still, so he continued. “What kind of Christmas traditions did you have growing up?”

She finally broke her concentration and gave him a look. He only smirked at this, which infuriated her even further. Knowing that he wasn’t going to stop pestering her until she answered his stupid question, she sighed and succumbed to his request. “Mom, Dad, Russ and I used to watch A Christmas Carol Christmas Eve. It was our special Christmas tradition.” She mocked him. He just smiled widely and left the lab with a quick goodbye. Bones shook her head and returned to her work.

It was Christmas evening and Tempe was sitting quietly at home writing her novel. She heard a knock at her door and she rose to answer it. She wasn’t surprised when she found Booth standing on the other side of the door.

“Hi Bones! Merry Christmas!” he greeted her with an incredibly cheesy grin.

“Merry Christmas.” She said back. “Come in.” He stepped inside her apartment with his hands stuffed into his pockets.

“Listen, Bones, do you wanna come back to my place for a while? You should at least spend the night with another human being. It’s not right for you to be alone and cooped up on Christmas.” And just for good measure, he flashed her one of his best charm smiles.

Damn him and that smile. She thought. “Okay.”

When they arrived at his place she asked “What have you got planned that’s so special?”

“You’ll see.” He said with a wink. “Go sit down on the couch.” She obeyed him, and watched as he popped a DVD into his DVD player. Then, he joined her on the couch.

She knew what movie he’d picked out as soon as it came on the screen. “A Christmas Carol!” Her eyes lit up, and he chuckled.

“I thought you’d like it.”

“Shh!” she hushed him. He laughed again, and focused on the screen.

A couple of hours later, the movie had finished. Somewhere between the ghost of Jacob Marley and the ghost of Christmas Yet-To-Come, she’d inched closer to him, their thighs almost touching, and he’d thrown his arm on the back of the sofa behind her shoulders.

She turned to him. “Thanks, Booth. I’m really glad you did this for me. Thank you very much… it really means a lot that you revived this tradition for me. Maybe…” she yawned, “Maybe it can be our tradition now.”

She yawned again, and Booth smiled at her. “Yeah. I think I’d like that.”
Somewhat sleepily, she nodded at him. “Come on.” He said. “I’ll drive you home.”

FINIS!
