Gesine rubbed her sister’s shoulder comfortingly. “What’s wrong?” Sandra glanced up, her head resting on her arms, and shrugged. “You can tell me.”

“Do you think we’re right together?” she asked picking herself up to a sitting position.

“What?”

“Can you tell we’re in love?” she stared off across the thinning crowd where Jesse was chatting with the head of security.

“You and Jesse? Yeah. Definitely.” Gesine sighed, relieved that her sister’s problem was easy to solve.

“Are you saying that because it’s true or because you’re my maid of honor?”

“Hey, I didn’t even receive that title until after you arrived.” she nudged a smile out of her older sibling. “Do you want me to say you aren’t?”

“I want the truth.”

“Honestly? It seems like you guys have a private love. Not that it’s a bad thing,” she added quickly. “It’s just that you know how you feel, but can’t completely express it well to everyone else. Although, I guess this marriage does that pretty well.” She searched Sandra’s face, hoping the somewhat conflicted message came across well.

“I want people to know.”

“It’s none of their business,” Gesine pointed out. Her sister had always been adamant that the private life was kept far out of the limelight.

“But I want them too anyway,” Sandra argued, her voice collecting a slight whine. “I want them to see pictures of us, to read an interview, and tell immediately how much we care for each other. From the way we look to how close we are.”

“You want chemistry?”

“Chemistry, we have. A big spectacle of fireworks for all to see. That’d be nice.”

“Why does it matter? And why are you bringing it up now?”

Sandra slid her fork through the remains of her dinner. Her voice went soft. “I’ve wanted this for a long time. To have that envious love. Relatives watch you together and are reminded of their own spouse. People off the street smile and sigh at the very sight. Young girls idolize it. I guess … I guess it makes it even more real. That, not only do you know you love him, but you’re so in love that everyone can tell.”

“And you don’t think you have it?” she shook her head.

“I think … I think I could. Maybe. I assumed it was a love you felt from the start, but maybe time can help it grow as well.”

“Well,” Gesine began taking her fork from her. “You have it with Jesse. Trust me.”

But Sandra, as she watched her sister collect the dirty plates, wasn’t convinced. Gesine had it, no doubt there. Sandra’s brother-in-law was her other half. They admired, respected, and loved each other. It wasn’t that Sandra didn’t feel any of those things for Jesse -- she was certain that she did. Maybe it was post-wedding nerves, maybe it was a late realization of truth, but suddenly Sandra doubted if their love was the marrying kind.

“I noticed Keanu’s still here,” Gesine said, bringing Sandra back to the table. Sandra blinked, and looked to where she’d last spotted him: sitting at his assigned seat comfortably conversing with those around him. Although he seemed refreshed, she could see the exhaustion tugging at his eyes. It had been a long night and he was still here. Her closest high school friends long since left but he remained. There was stability in the fact that he wouldn’t leave her until he felt he wasn’t needed any longer. It touched her, as his thoughtfulness always did.

“Yes, yes he is,” she finally responded, watching him chuckle politely at another table member’s joke.

“It’s kind of late for male friends to still be around.” Sandra looked over her shoulder, unappreciative of the suggestive smile on her sister’s face.

“Kind of late for sisters too.” she replied coldly.

“Sandy. At least acknowledge that you adore each other.” Gesine smiled, but Sandra couldn’t even bring herself to a fake one. Nothing irked her more than this roundabout argument.

“We do not.”

“He wanted to be the one up on the altar with you.”

“We’re close friends. Same story for eleven years now.”

“I see the way he looks at you. And I have never heard him laugh how he does around you.”

“It’s a terrible laugh. I’m sure you’ve blocked out any other moments.” she cleaned out the rest of her champagne.

“I hope I’m not interrupting sisters bonding,” Keanu said taking a seat on the other side of Sandra. He showed no sign of hearing their earlier conversation, which brought her some relief.

“No, I think I’ve had enough for tonight.” Sandra shot a meaningful glance at her sister, who returned with a callous glare. He looked between them, perplexed.

“Did I miss something?”

“Maybe Keanu can answer your question,” Gesine suggested. She turned to him. “Do you think Sandra and Jesse are right for each other? Can you tell they’re in love?”

“Of course,” he answered calmly.

“Hmm. Isn’t that a nice, non adoring answer.” Sandra mused.

Gesine wasn’t finished. “So you think any passerby will know immediately that they love each other, just by the way they act?”

“Sure.”

“And you have no qualms with that?” Sandra asked him. Keanu’s brows furrowed.

“I don’t see why I would.”

“Hmm. How interesting.” she looked over at Gesine, who picked up the collected stack of plates and walked away without comment.

“I definitely missed something there.” he shook his head. “Anyway, the reason I came over was to tell you I was leaving. I had a great time, thank you for inviting me, I’ll replace that vase, blah blah blah.” he held out his hands expectantly. “Treat bag?”

Sandra slapped them. “There you go. We’re going cheap this year.” her hands stilled on top, stinging from the harsh impact of skin on skin. “Thank you for staying so long,” she said. Her voice had gone mushy soft, to her dismay. “I mean, it meant a lot to me and Jesse that you stuck around.” she could feel Keanu’s forefinger tickle against her sensitive palm. A vibe with the spark of a firework shivered from the center of her hand all the way up her arm. She pulled her hands away at the unexpected reaction. His eyes refused to leave her face.

“I knew you needed all the support you could get today.” sensing that he had made her uncomfortable, Keanu rose to his feet, she mimicking, and he gave Sandra a quick, friendly hug. She stepped behind her chair the moment it ended, marking the barrier between them. Keanu shifted in the awkward. “Tell Jesse I said congratulations, again.”

“I will. Thanks for coming.”

“Sure.”
