Drunken Brtrayal,Part 2

After much talk between Angela and Booth, they’d decided to tell Brennan what had happened. It hadn’t been an easy decision, but they both knew that they couldn’t keep it from her for very long. They were both consumed with guilt, and their behaviors were altered because of it. Eventually, she’d start asking questions and they both knew they’d never be able to keep it from her, no matter how much they wanted to. They both loved her too much. And their mistake would cost them.

So they’d called her into her office one day, and were brave about it. They told her what happened. Straight up. Just like that. At first there was no reaction. There wasn’t any angry yelling or throwing things, not that they’d expected that anyway, but it would have been better than her simple nod of the head.

Then came the look. It was hurt, disbelief, anger, sadness and defeat all in one, and it shone through the tears that had gathered in her beautiful blue eyes. But they would not fall. She wouldn’t let it happen. Her eyes saw right through them both.

The room was silent for what seemed to be a small eternity. But Angela found the courage to break the silence. “Sweetie, we’re…”

“Save it, Angela.” Sharp and blunt, but defeated. Her walls they’d both worked so hard to push past were back up, and stronger than ever. “I don’t want an apology.” Brennan grabbed her coat.

Tears streamed down Angela’s cheeks. Booth was fighting hard to keep his emotions in check. They both knew that their mistake had shattered any trust Brennan had laid in them. And there was no way they were going to build it back up. And they had nobody to blame but themselves.

She pulled on her coat then moved to stand in front of them. Booth first.

“Bones…I’m sorry.” The sadness was in his voice.

She slapped him across the face. Hard. That was it. She had nothing to say to him. Then she turned her attention to Angela. She opened her mouth several times, as if to say something, then she finally sighed and just shook her head. Turning swiftly on her heel, she walked down the hallway and out of the lab without so much as a second glance.

They would continue to work together because after all, they were the best. But things would be different. All professional. Nothing personal. They would never earn back what they had with Brennan, that was for sure. And it was all because of them and their mistake.
