Bad Day

Brennan groaned as she turned away from the sunlight that was streaming through her bedroom window. Lazily, she opened her eyes. She blinked a couple of times, stretched and then she paused. Something was not right. It was never this bright out when she left for work in the morning. She glanced at her alarm clock, and then froze. It was 10:00 a.m. She’d forgotten to set her alarm clock and now she was late. She was never late. Ever.

With lightning speed, she jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom. Twenty minutes later she was rushing into the kitchen with bare feet and wet, pulled-back hair. She reached for her coffee filters, and then realized that she’d used her last one the previous morning. Sighing in frustration, she decided to forget about breakfast. She put on her shoes and quickly left her apartment.

Walking briskly towards her office she was stopped by Angela. “Sweetie! Where have you been? I was beginning to get worried. You’re never late for work! I thought something might have happened to you.Are you sick?”

“No.Nothing happened.” Short.

“Then why were you late?”

“I overslept.”

“That’s it?” said Angela. She’d clearly been expecting something bigger than ‘I overslept’.

“Yes, Angela. I overslept. That’s it.” Angela could tell her friend was irritated so she decided to leave it alone. Brennan proceeded to her office. She reached for her lab coat and threw it on. In doing so, she looked down and found that the feet in her shoes were bare. Great. Just great. Amazing how she didn’t even realize this until she was at the lab. Could this day be any worse?

A couple of hours later she was sitting at her desk trying to write a new chapter for her book. She figured that this was maybe the one thing in her day that could go right. But that wasn’t working out for her either as she had a small case of writer’s block. She was so frustrated with how her day was going that she couldn’t seem to write as easily because of it. She’d been staring at her screen for ten minutes, growing more frustrated by the second, when she heard a voice.

“Hey Bones!” Booth said happily.

“Booth.” Booth made a face at her short greeting, but didn’t say anything.

“We’ve got a new case.”

“Great. Something else for me to mess up today.” She mumbled. This was definitely not improving her bad mood.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“It’s definitely not nothing.”

“I told you it’s nothing, okay? Drop it!” She got up from her desk, grabbed the file from his hand and started looking through it.

“Okay, it’s nothing. Geez, Bones, who pissed in your cornflakes this morning?”

Annoyed, she looked at him. “I don’t know what that means.” He just smirked, adding to her annoyance. She whacked him on the arm with the file and then left her office. He followed behind her, still smiling.
