Early One Morning
Debbie

The alarm clock started ringing, shocking Blair into consciousness. He looked over at the offending object and reached out to stop the noise. Soon, quiet had returned to the room and Blair blinked several times before the numbers on the clock face cleared enough so he could read the time -- 4:30 AM. Blair flopped back down in his bed, wishing for a few more minutes of sleep and rest before he had to get up.

However, it wasn't meant to be. Scant minutes later, there was a knock on his bedroom door and the unmistakable voice of his roommate. "You up, Sandburg? We've got to get moving!"

Blair still lay flat in his bed, but he answered Jim. "Yeah, Jim. I'm up. Didn't you hear my alarm clock? I'm getting dressed right now."

Suddenly, the door opened and Jim Ellison stood over Blair lying in his bed. "Getting dressed, Sandburg?" Jim couldn't keep the laughter out of his voice.

"I just need to rest my eyes for a few minutes."

Jim pulled on the blankets and comforter covering Blair, exposing Blair to the cool, early morning air. Blair opened his eyes and sat up suddenly in his bed.

"Hey, Jim! What do you think you're doing? You said we weren't leaving until 6:00 AM! I can have a few more minutes of peace and quiet!"

"Not as slow as you are getting ready, Chief. Your shower alone will take a half an hour. Get to it!"

Blair got to his feet, stomping his way towards the bathroom, muttering all the way. "Tell me again why I agreed to go with you?"

"Because you love going camping and fishing." Jim chuckled as he watched Blair slam the bathroom door behind him.

"Cold and wet is my world -- it's what always happens." Those were Blair's last words as he got into the shower and the water blocked out any other observations.

Jim knew Blair would grouse and complain the entire trip to their camping site. Along with sleeping more than half the way there. Once they arrived at their destination, Blair would be well rested and have all his complaining out of the way and he'd be ready to join Jim in the camping, fishing, and hiking.

Blair came out of the bathroom after his shower. He was more awake than when he had gone in. He sat down at the table and drank the coffee Jim had poured for him.

"Thanks for the coffee, Jim."

"It's the least I can do for you since I pulled the covers off of you."

"True, Jim. I WAS awake!"

"Yeah, with your eyes still closed. Neat trick."

"Do you need help loading up your truck?" Blair already knew the answer to this question, although he always offered to help Jim.

"Nah, I already have most everything loaded up, except your duffel and backpack."

"Well then, I guess we're good to go."

"Yep, we are. Rinse your cup out and leave it in the rack to dry."

Blair only rolled his eyes at Jim and did as he instructed. Jim had already grabbed Blair's duffel bag. Blair put his coat on and grabbed his backpack. It was going to be a great vacation, as they all were.
