The Sentinel/Guide Connection
Debbie

Blair had been back in Cascade for over a year. He and Jim saw each other almost every day. Jim would let Blair run tests on his senses. During their time together, both men realized there was a definite connection between them. They would know when the other was in pain, or had a problem, or was about to call the other. Both of them knew it was a special thing they were connected.

Blair ran tests on their connection also, encouraging Jim to do the same thing. If Jim was thinking about food, Blair could tell him exactly what kind it was. If Blair was teaching a class, Jim knew whether Blair was going to give a pop quiz to his students. Of course, there was a way for each of them to block the other, but most of the time, they didn't even consider that as an option.

Blair was sitting in his living room, listening to jazz music and grading essays from his students. He had just finished talking to Jim, who was going to come over shortly so they could go to the movies together.

All of a sudden, Blair jumped to his feet, dropping the papers all over the floor. He grabbed his head and moaned.

"Jim!"

Blair stumbled over to the door, but the pain was overwhelming. Something was wrong with Jim. Blair tried to clear his thoughts to determine exactly what was wrong. He got images of a crash and Jim trapped inside.

Blair was able to stumble over to his cell phone and punch in 9-1-1. He closed his eyes and was able to visualize where Jim was and relay that information to the dispatcher. Blair collapsed on the floor after finishing the call. He wanted to go to Jim, but he couldn't do it with the intensity of their connection. He'd have to get help.

He was able to dial Simon's number and explained to him what was going on and that he needed help to get to the hospital. Simon told him to stay put and he'd be by soon. Blair thanked Simon and stayed on the floor, trying to put a little distance between him and Jim. He was able to push it back a little bit, but it was still intense. He would be able to work on it more.

^^^^^

Blair sat with Simon in the waiting room. Blair had been able to see Jim when he arrived at the hospital and Jim had even been aware for a few minutes while Blair was there. Blair told Jim to relax and that he would be right there when he came out of surgery.

"And I need you to come out of surgery, Jim. I need you."

"I need you, too, Chief," said Jim as he drifted off.

Now, Blair sat in the chair, his eyes closed, meditating and thinking only good thoughts of Jim and him. It was going to be okay. It had to be okay. There was no other option.

Simon watched as Blair sat in the chair, sitting perfectly still. He hadn't seen Blair like that. But it was also obvious that Blair had changed since leaving Cascade and then coming back. He had been more distant, although over the past several months, he and Jim had reconnected as they had before the fountain incident.

Simon had asked Jim about it, thinking the detective would tell him the particulars. However, Jim seemed rather cagey about details and only said that Blair had resumed helping him with some problems he had encountered with his senses. Plus the fact that Blair occasionally helped with some cases, even though he didn't want to have anything to do with the police department.

Simon thought about asking Blair the same questions, but figured the answers would probably be even more cryptic and uninformative. Blair did obfuscations much better than Jim did. For now, Simon would be there in support of his detective and the former observer.

Blair automatically opened his eyes when the doctor came into the room. He stood up and walked over to the man, noting Jim's blood on the scrubs. Blair already knew Jim had survived the surgery, but was still in serious condition. He let the doctor give the particulars as he and Simon listened intently. Blair asked for permission to see Jim in the recovery room and the doctor gave him a few minutes. A nurse came to take Blair to recovery.

Blair stood by the bed, sensing Jim's tiredness, pain and confusion. Blair sent his own thoughts of peace and calm to Jim, hoping the older man would latch onto them. After several minutes, Blair could detect that Jim was less confused and knew Blair was there.

Blair touched Jim on the arm. "It'll be okay, Jim. I'll be here. Maybe not physically all of the time, but I'll be here. Your shaman will help you heal. Rest, sentinel. And peaceful dreams. Think of the jungle and the waterfall."

^^^^^

It was several days before Jim was fully aware, although he knew Blair was there. He thought it was nice that he could see Blair in his mind and actually hold a conversation with the young man.

Blair would go whenever Jim called to him. He hid the fact that it was tiring for him to do it for long periods. He knew Jim needed the reassurance and the health of the sentinel was the most important thing at this time. He could do it for Jim. He had to do it for Jim.

Jim could sense a difference in Blair. But he couldn't quite put his finger on it. He watched as Blair avoided looking at him directly.

"Blair, are you okay?"

"I'm fine, Jim." Blair's voice was flat and Jim noted the tired tone.

"Why don't you lie down and take a nap? I've been too demanding of your time."

"No you haven't. You needed this and I need to make sure you have it."

Jim was able to get over to Blair's side and get him to lay down with his head in Jim's lap. Jim delicately stroked Blair's hair, humming a soft tune, helping Blair to relax. Soon, the shaman's eyes closed and Blair was asleep. Both sentinel and guide rested.

^^^^^

Jim opened his eyes and smiled. Blair's head rested on the hospital bed and the exhausted young man was fast asleep. It had worked. Jim wasn't so sure it would, but he was pleased that it had. When Blair woke up later, Jim would send him home to get some proper rest.

Blair had done his job, going beyond the call of duty. The shaman in him had worked overtime in assuring himself that the sentinel was aware and knew the guide was by his side during his initial recovery. Now the guide needed to recharge his batteries. Jim knew he wasn't strong enough yet to offer help to his guide, but he had been able to get him to rest, which was an important step.

Blair slowly woke up surprised he had fallen asleep. Then he remembered it wasn't his decision to go to sleep, it had been Jim's decision. That meant Jim was on the road to recovery. A good sign and Blair would be able to relax.

Blair looked over at Jim when he raised his head.

"Are you doing better, Jim?"

"Thanks to my shaman, yes I am. I think you can go home for a while now. We both need to rest. I mean real rest this time."

"You are right, Jim. I'll go home and get some proper rest. I'll be back later to check up on you."

"It can wait until tomorrow, Chief. Thank you for all of your help."

"I'm just glad you're going to be okay. This is what I didn't want to do, but I guess I have no choice with you. It's the nature of our connection, the nature of sentinel and guide."

"I don't mind, if you don't mind."

"I don't mind. There's no one else I'd rather care about but you. I've always cared about you."

"And I've always cared about you, Chief. Go home. Peaceful dreams."

Blair smiled as he left the hospital room.
