Some crunches are satisfying- doing fifty crunches in the morning to get blood flowing, or the sound of desired potato chip finally being eaten. Some crunches aren’t so satisfying, in fact, they are despised. And Derek Morgan despised the crunch of his wrist as he tackled the unsub to the pavement.
Morgan bit his bottom lip, keeping the pain to himself, and then jumped to his feet to use his good hand to haul the unsub off the ground. He kept his injured wrist against his abdomen, shoving the unsub at the nearest uniformed officer. The rest of his team was watching him intently, and he knew they noticed that he’d been hurt.
“Morgan,” Gideon said, the first to walk up to the steaming agent.
Morgan needed to only lift his eyes. Gideon took a gentle hold of Morgan’s injured wrist, and slowly, but cautiously, checked it over. But as careful as Gideon was being, the broken wrist still hurt and Morgan’s free hand was balled in a fist.
“I’ll take you to the hospital. You’ll need X-rays and most likely a cast,” Gideon finally reported.
“We’ll be at the station,” Hotch replied, then shifted his glance to Morgan. “And you take care of yourself. Don’t worry about this, we got him.”
Morgan nodded, then followed Gideon to the car. He climbed into the passenger seat, being careful not to jar his arm, and silently accepted Gideon’s help with the buckling of the seatbelt. Morgan leaned back in the seat, his eyes closed and he kept biting the inside of his cheek with every pothole Gideon couldn’t avoid. At the hospital, it was a thankfully quick process that led to pain medication and X-rays. Once Morgan’s wrist was in a cast, and Morgan was asleep due to the medication, Gideon was able to report in.
“Oh, and Gideon?” Hotch said, after promising to fill the team in on Morgan’s condition.
“Yes?”
“Tell Morgan that he’s off of tackling duty from now on.”
“He’ll be disappointed,” Gideon noted.
“He’ll live,” Hotch replied. “Which is the point.”
Gideon smiled slightly, then he and Hotch exchanged see-you-later’s. The nurse insisted that Morgan sleep off the pain medication in the hospital, so Gideon sat with him. The normally vibrant young agent looked different as he slept with a cast on his left wrist. Gideon noticed the dark rings underneath Morgan’s eyes, a look he knew well since he wore it so often himself. Knowing that Morgan would eventually be alright, Gideon leaned back in the stiff hospital chair and managed a nap while Morgan remained in a medicine-induced sleep.
