"Kort, a word," Trent Kort looked up from his computer, surprised that deputy director Manning wanted to talk to him. He wondered what he'd done this time to get the honor of a private word with his boss. For once, he wasn't aware of any mistakes he could probably have done lately.

"Close the door," Manning told him as Kort entered the office. Manning sat down behind his desk. Kort stood by the door and waiting for whatever was going to happen.
"NCIS has a new director," he said and, answering Kort's questioning look that was trying to hide the confusion, he added, "Leon Vance will be officially in business starting today." Kort was even more confused now than before and he wondered what happened to Jenny, let alone why this was the kind of news he had to learn of in private.
"I understand there were some ... differences between Vance and you," Manning said, again reading Kort's mind. "I expect that you'll put them behind. NCIS and their new director will have our full support. Understood?"
"Yes, sir." Kort nodded, but he knew that this was easier said than done. Leon and he would never get along. Too much had happened to put it behind. But that wasn't important now. There were other, more private things he needed to work with right now.
"What happened to Jen- ... Director Shepard?" he asked, trying to sound uninterested.
"Shepard's dead," Manning answered. "The CIA will offer our official condolences at the funeral. But that's none of your business."

The hell it is, Kort thought, surprised that he even managed to form a proper thought. The news of Vance being assigned as the new director of NCIS alone was something that could cause him sleepless nights, but that Jenny was dead just pulled the rug out from under him.
"You're dismissed," Manning said, but Kort wasn't listening. Full of memories and tears he wouldn't cry he left the office.

"Pissed the boss of, Kort?" Ray Cruz called from across the room. More out of habit than actually planned, Kort sent him a deadly stare and kept walking. He would take care of Cruz later. Right now he needed some privacy to deal with the loss of someone he shared a short and yet important history with. And no-one but him knew.
