Secrets (Advent Day 13)

Good morning! Happy Advent day 13. Hope you enjoy part one of the story I wrote!

Also on AO3.

“Did it come?” Christopher burst into the house, almost startling Eddie when he shouted. Carla followed at a slower pace, shaking her head at his exuberance.

Eddie sighed as Christopher made his way over to him. “What would you have done if Buck was here?” he asked.

“Buck isn’t here. His Jeep isn’t outside,” Christopher said confidently. “Did it come?”

Eddie sighed before nodding. Knowing that the next thing Christopher was going to ask, he stood up. He’d been sitting on the couch when Christopher burst in, trying to convince himself he didn’t need to call Buck to ask the other man to come cook dinner for them. Eddie was tired, worn out from almost back to back shifts.

Motioning for Christopher to stay put, Eddie hurried to his room. It had taken him a while to figure out where to hide the surprise. He’d ruled out all the normal places since it was likely Buck would look in them, even by accident. So any of his drawers and his closet were immediately vetoed. He considered his bedside table, but they kept the lube in there. If he switched it to the other side, Buck would want to know why. Then he’d remembered the small box of keepsakes. There wasn’t much it in, a few reminders of dates he and Buck had been on and some stuff of Shannon’s that he should probably give to Christopher. But Buck had absolutely no reason to look in it. So the small box had been tucked away in it. Now he took it out of the keepsake box and tucked it in his pocket before going back out to the living room.

Christopher practically pounced on him when he re-entered the room. “Lemme see, Dad,” he demanded.

Eddie chuckled at his eagerness, but produced the box, opening it up so Christopher could see the rings. He’d made the decision to ask Buck just two short weeks after they started dating, but it’d taken him months to find the perfect ring. Finally he’d settled on the one he held in his hand. Surrounded by black tungsten, the center was a purple and blue imagining of the Orian galaxy. He hadn’t felt comfortable wearing such a flashy piece, but a plain black tungsten band complemented the other nicely. Nestled in the same box were two plain black silicone bands that they could wear at work.

“It’s perfect,” Christopher breathed. “Buck is gonna love it.” He looked up as Eddie closed the box. “When’re ya gonna ask him?”

“We’ve got dinner reservations in a couple of nights,” Eddie said. “I’m going to ask him then.” He closed the box. “Why don’t you go work on your homework? I was considering ordering pizza for dinner.”

Christopher cheered as he crutched away.

“Buck is going to love that, Eddie. You did good,” Carla said with a smile before trailing after Christopher.

Eddie took a deep breath before heading back to his room. He really did hope that Buck liked it.

To be concluded in Part Two on December 20th.
