Basically your run of the mill fantasy. I would not say that it is very out of the ordinary. Quite well written and entertaining at the same time.

If not for the multitude of descriptions of self-harm (cutting one's hand in order to perform blood magic) I would have classified the book as yound adult fantasy.

I remember, there were some books that felt as if they were made of the substance of dreams, slow, hazy and beautiful or scary. The House of Sleep is not one of them. It is at the same time much more mundane and more surreal ( Read more... )

Recently I read the Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult. In a gist this book is about the monumental lie that the racial divides have been largely breached in the US. Gretel and the Dark by Eliza Granville, is a book quite cleverly constructed. The storyline seems to be two-fold, and even fantasy-like at time. Nonetheless all is not what it seems in this book.
