Damn hot topic. I know people think I'm just being over dramatic and my designs aren't "good" enough for hot topic to steal... but I'm telling you.. Its not just me either. Since when do they make Lolita skirts ( Read more... )

Its not just you though, i mean it's a whole genre. you're definitely not the only one on ebay or online making that style, just like a year ago i wasnt the only one online doing DIY band shirts, and low and behold they ended up in hot topic a couple months later. Hot topic has people whose entire jobs are just to search the internet for trends and fashion genres.

Hot Topic stinks I've been saying that for ages :P Hehe well now I go there for the anime stuff but other then that it stinks. Anyway i'd guess people who buy DIY will buy it anyway and the people who shop at the mall will shop at the mall...

uhmm hunny.. yours are like 10 times better :/ not to mention i'd buy a skirt off of you or someone else who makes them themselves before i'd ever buy clothes from that craphole place EVER again. EVERYTHING THERE FALLS APART! They put a rediculous price tag on things just so when you get home you notice the tag says "made in korea" then seams start busting apart not only when you wash it, but when you wear it.
I don't even think I have shopped there in like at least 2 years now. Whent hey first opened they had so much cool "old skool raver"-type stuff like that reflective sailor mon messenger bag they had, reflective redballs brand pants, rainbow platform shoes, etc.. now it's just a bunch of like generic emo-rock crap in my opinion. *shrug*

It's definitely possible. I remember dropdeaddiy was saying she saw T-shirt recons just like hers in there, and there's been some definite shrinkle style stuff (well, the stuff she used to make) As a poster has said above: They actually employ people to basically steal ideas from kid's outfits at shows and online.

personally, i do not think it is worth worrying about people coping you in the general sense. (if they are sttealing yr images or whatever~ that is a totally seperate matter! but i am not talking about that ( ... )

its not really that I care so much that someone copied me, its more like Hot Topic is already a "well established" business and the fact that they go around stealing ideas from people such as myself (I know I'm not the only one) is just kind of sad.

I'm working on ideas and stuff at the moment. They won't be visible to the public till January cuz that's when I have to start showing that I'm improving or what not for co-op, but I've definitely been trying to think of new ideas.... and its tough! hehe :p

what co-op? (jADE is curious! heehee) anyway, i shall look forward to this coming january!

sadly, unlike other forms of intellectual property, garment design is not protected in the same way as say a painting would be.

exmaple: levis made the first "jeans" but are all the companies making jeans today "coping" them?

unless you have some specific method that is patented for a garment there really is no protection against coping at all..... other than maybe one's conscience & many people seem to be seriously lacking in that department.

happily, everyone i know that has any kind of concern about design thinks HT sucks & refuses to shop there for clothes. maybe a person will buy the ocassional pair of tights, patch or tee shirt~ but not for things that are actually design orintated like blouses, skirts or pants b/c these issues are pretty well known & lots of poeple know HT sucks, copies poeple & is shady in general. i never go there any more.

anyhoo, i am still looking for a nice post card to send you! ^_^
