Given that that fandom...
And that ship...
Form the festering primordial ooze that the first slash fangirls came crawling out of, I think I might have to become a fan. It could be a form of patriotic duty to fangirls everywhere.
Yes, I saw the movie. And it was awesome, and I'm probably going to go see it again soon

Shhhh, don't worry; I've known that for a while. That's why I'm kinda iffy about though; I gather that the original fandom is Not Amused by the sudden inrush of new fans... for quite understandable reasons (I mean, dude, look at what happened to the LotR fandom-- Legolas will probably never be able to show his face in front of the other elves ever again), but it makes me wonder how easy it is for new fans to not get looked down on by the people who've been in the fandom for a while and can actually write.
I looked at the section on the Pit for the new movie though, and I was surprised to see a lot of Uhura love. The second she got near to Spock, I was sure the fangirls were going to want her dead....

Well, you need to watch the original, too. I mean, the old Star Trek Enterprise was fucking epic and this new movie solidified the belief that Star Trek is the best sci-fi thingie ever since my childhood XD
And oh God, I remember the newbies of LotR... they scare me .__. still do, actually. Poor Legolas...
I love her part and her as a character and thought I love Kirk/Spock, she didn't make me squick because I knew her from the original (if I remember correctly). BUT THEY PRONOUNCED HER NAME WRONG. It's pronounced "you-hurr-ah", not "you-whore-uh". That made me squick >>

However, I do have to disagree about Star Trek being the best sci-fi ever, because Doctor Who > everything. Although I'm afraid of the fandom for that, because that show was like, my childhood. And I'm sure that now it's literally getting raped. DX
Sometimes I wonder what would happen if LotR and HP fandoms had a horribleness showdown. Who would turn out to be worse? (Personally, I just really wish that 40-year-old women wouldn't write self-insert Legomances. It's fucking creepy.)
I felt weird about Spock/Uhura because it felt so random to me. Actually, I feel like I'm probably the only person who thought she was hotter in the original. :/
