After much obnoxious wheedling, I've finally succeeded in getting my mom to read Death Note. Which is awesome, really. She's just finished the second volume, so we were talking over the whole Raye and Naomi arc ( Read more... )

Just because a guy is nice, it doesn't mean he can't be a sexist >.>; Be it a fiction or reality. I work with a very nice guy, but every time I hear him about what women should not do, I seriously want to smash something. That's why I don't think that a relatively positive portrayal in the story means we are to interpret such things in a positive way.
(That being said - DN authors are probably affected by the views on women in their culture and didn't do their homework properly >.>)

True-- my issue is mostly that I don't get the feeling that the author was trying to portray Raye as a nice person who also happens to be sexist; the way it comes across, I don't think the author even realized there was any sexism there.

But yeah, I've definitely also had the experience of coming across basically nice people who are also sexist. It's so disappointing. My dad flat out said once that, "The ultimate activity for men is battle; the ultimate activity for women is giving birth." And he genuinely had no idea why that made my mom and I pissed at him. Idk who he thinks he is, that he can speak for all men and all women. >.>

This type of thing (sexism/ any type of judgement/ stereotyping) is what steers/ has steered me away from a ton of literature/media in general.

I can understand that. It really disappoints me when I like a series but end up realizing that it does display some sort of prejudice. I mean, I love Death Note for the most part. But almost every major female character just makes me cringe.
