So last night was my night at the AIDS Hospice. As I was walking in, EMT's were wheeling out one of my regulars (patients, not volunteers). I'm fairly certain he was dead. If he wasn't, it appeared as if he would be very soon. Way to start the evening.
But luckily none of my volunteers saw him, and they were AMAZING. Probably my best batch of volunteers ever. Without my having to prod them, they all chose tables and started chatting with the residents immediately. They were so engrossed in their conversations I had trouble getting them to leave at the end of the night. My personal favorite part of the evening? I was talking to this resident who had a REALLY thick Jamaican accent. So thick I was having trouble understanding him, and was resorting to the smile and nod. Midway through the conversation, he randomnly switched to Spanish, maybe to see if I was really paying attention. And...I understood him! Every word! we had a whole chat in Spanish about how he used to work on a boat! It was fun.
