I had my first day of PhD school yesterday. The three words I would use to explain it would be hot, sweaty, and overwhelming. I finally got to talk to the people in the lab I will be spending some time working in. Hopefully, I will fit in with the people already there and will get the opportunity to see new techniques. I have to talk to a couple of different people the the lab to find out about their project. I have to start determining what I would like to do for a project. I'm a little unsure about where to start and hope that talking to these people will set me on the right track.
Today I sat in on the laboratory class I will teaching next semester. The students all seem a bit unenthusiastic about being in the class but that may change as the lab exercises get more interesting. I then had my advanced microbiology with Dr. Pierce. He's the advisor for my section of the biology department and I'm working in his lab. He gave us a pre-test and I know i didn't do well on it. I hope that he doesn't look at it and thinks why the hell did we let her in. I think that I will like this class. He seems to be trying to cover the important basics while still keeping the class on a graduate level.
My schedule on Wednesday is a bit crazy. I have a class from 9-10 am and then the next one is at 5:30 pm. I have a feeling that I will be spending a large amount of time in the lab on Wednesday. I'm going to try and work in an exercise session sometime during the day since I have to leave home so early to make the train and get to school on time. Friday is even worse since I need to be in at 8 in the morning for a lab meeting and then class at 9. I'll most likely spend more time in the lab on Fridays since the 9 o'clock class is my only one. Either the lab or I'm going home.
This is getting long so I'll sign off for now. I had more to say this afternoon but i've forgotten it so from now on I'll make notes during the day and then upload it after a few days. More later.
