While walking my dog and ruminating on the complexities and mysteries of life and writing, I had the brilliant thought:
If you love someone, set them free. If they come back, no one else was crazy enough to want them.
When I got home to impart this brilliant wisdom to D and see if he felt it appropriate for a 19th century story, he said it was already in Grosse Point Blank, only it was:
If you love someone, set them free. If they come back, they're defective.
Both are true, of course, but which would sound better in early 19th century conversation?
