“ How do I look ?” Donna had put on Dilys’ housecoat and was giving Ianto a twirl.
“ Very stylish.” Ianto responded with a cheeky smile as he put on Evans coat.
“ Don’t knock it, least mine fits…kind of !” came the redheads response taking in the way the male C’tylni coat rather swamped Ianto.
“ True,” replied the Welshman, “ but I can forgo sartorial eloquence for once as long as it does the trick of fooling our potential visitor.”
Ianto placed the PDA onto the kitchen table as he adjusted the oversized coat so as not to impede his movement. As he did so he noticed a change in his companion.
“ Everything alright Donna ?”
“ Huh ? Oh.. a.. yea, sorry. Just, this is kinda new. Not the alien stuff, been there done that, got the t-shirt as they say, but the waiting, that’s kinda new. Usually with the Doc we hit the ground running, quite literally more often than not, you know land bang smack in the middle of whatever’s going on, or it finds us pretty quickly, sitting and waiting doesn’t tend to happen.” Donna replied explaining her sudden change in mood.
“ Well if it’s the sitting and waiting that is the problem let’s keep you occupied.” Ianto said, cutting off what no doubt was about to be a risqué response from his companion by holding up a tea towel and nodding towards the kitchen sink, adding “ Wash or dry ?”
Donna laughed as she turned to the sink evidently choosing to wash rather than dry.

“ How you doing there Doc ?” Jack asked as he and the Time Lord headed out of the tree line and across an open field, picking up pace as they got to the more even ground.
“ Fine,” came the succinct reply.
Jack couldn’t help the small grin that came to his face at the change of circumstance, in the past it had been him trailing behind the Time Lord when running had been involved.
“ We should close in on the Xa’lk quite a bit cutting across here.” The Immortal commented, checking his wrist strap to confirm the ‘visitors’ current trajectory.
“ I take it ‘it’ is sticking to the more secluded route ?” The Doctor asked starting to feel the pace a little, not that he was prepared to let that on to Jack.
“ Yeah. There is still pretty good cover it can use for now before it will need to come out into the open and be more cautious.” Jack confirmed as the pair continued on their way.
“ How sure are you that Ianto can keep Donna safe ?” The Gallifreyan asked, his concern for his current companion, as well as his doubt at the Torchwood archivists defensive abilities, seeping into his voice.
“ Very.” Jack answered bluntly. “ He’d give his life protecting her.”
“ Perhaps, but she isn’t one of his team,” The Doctor pointed out.
Jack stopped abruptly causing the Doctor to do so as well. The Immortal turned and starred at the man he had gone to the end of the universe for.
“ What does that matter. Ianto gave his life protecting someone who does nothing but try to belittle and undermine him and his position, both professionally and personally. If he did that for them, then I am certain he would do the same for someone he likes and gets on with so well. Don’t you think so Doctor ?”
“ I couldn’t say, I don’t know him.” The Time Lord countered.
“ No, you don’t.” Jack stated pointedly “ because if you did the question of Ianto keeping Donna safe wouldn’t have even crossed your mind, let alone been said aloud.”
Jack turned away from the Doctor and began to run again back on route towards their alien visitor.
----------------------------------------------------
“ Is that everything Tosh ?” Martha asked as the two women turned to head back towards the Rmeslan cruiser now they had finished at the ‘safe haven’.
“ Here, yes, but I want to do a quick check of the inside of the actual ship before reactivating all the shielding.”
“ Think you’ll find something the Doctor missed ?” Martha asked, doubting that the Time Lord would have over looked something of importance, especially with Donnas safety involved.
Tosh looked up from her PDA at the UNIT medic, “ You never know, fresh eyes might pick up something.”
“ Will you be able to access…” Martha’s voice petered off realising what she was about to ask, “…off course you will.” The Londoner mentally admonished herself, she might not have known Toshiko long but in the short time she had Martha knew the stories Jack had told her about the young woman weren’t exaggeration and her technical ability was exceptional.
Once at the alien ship the women entered it via the ladder and Martha showed Tosh the area the Doctor had looked at and where he had brought up the ships information previously. The former companion stepped back allowing the Torchwood genius better access and the petite woman began to work. Martha shook her head slightly at how Tosh reminded her of the Doctor at that moment; intently focused on the task at hand seemingly oblivious to everything about her. Martha however had the feeling that the lady in front of her was far more aware of her immediate environment than the Time Lord ever seemed to be. As Tosh worked Martha looked around the apparent ‘living’ space in the ship, taking in more than she had done when inside it with the Doctor. It certainly wasn’t what you would call ‘homey’; at best she would describe it as basic. There didn’t appear to be anything personal on display, no pictures, no knick-knacks or souvenirs, no books, or alien equivalent of such things, nothing that one might expect to find in a living space occupied long term by a single occupant. It was strange but this seemed to concern Martha far more about their ‘visitor’ than the cache of weapons Tosh had secured at the ‘safe haven’. The apparent complete lack of ‘humanity’, if that could be applied to an alien, could make connecting to and hopefully bringing about a peaceful resolution to this situation difficult to say the least if not impossible. Martha was brought out of her musings by Owens voice over the comm. asking Tosh about the traffic.
---------------------------------------------------
Ianto and Donna had all but finished the washing and drying up when the warning alarm on the Welshman’s PDA sounded. The pair glanced at each other, then at the electronic device sitting on the table as Ianto moved to pick it up and check what was going on. The Xa’lk was approaching the Morgans at quiet a pace and looked as though he would be approaching the house from the farmland to the rear, much as Ianto had thought, making the kitchen its first port of call within the building.
“ Ianto.” Jacks voice was a little breathless and a lot concerned. “ The Xa’lk is nearing your location.”
“ I am aware Sir.” Ianto replied calmly as he and Donna moved around the Morgans kitchen getting into position to execute their plan.
“ We aren’t going to reach it before it gets to you, and Owen and Gwen are unlikely to either, thanks to traffic.” The Captain hesitated a fraction of a second knowing his next words wouldn’t be taken well, “ It might be an idea to secure yourselves in a safe location.”
“ Not happening, Sir, as I explained if it finds nothing here it will head to the neighbours, and I’m not risking that.” The tone of Ianto’s voice told Jack that he had been right; his lover hadn’t been pleased with his suggestion.
“ Understood.” Jack didn’t like it but he accepted it. “ Support will be there as soon as possible. Keep comms. open and both of you be careful.” The Captain added as he picked up the pace in the hope that he and the Doctor may still reach the Xa’lk before the Xa’lk reached the Morgans.
“ We will.” Ianto replied to Jack, and then turned his attention to Donna. “Ready?”
The Londoner looked over to her Welsh companion giving him a small determined smile, “ What do you think ?”
