Because the chances of you being murdered are a lot higher than actually catching the culprits.

These murders aren't stupid, and your refusal to come only makes you look more suspicious.

As far as I am aware there haven't been any witnesses. These murderers are smarter than you are giving them credit for.

I will not stand in the way of your investigation. I ask only that you report to the lobby so that we can keep track of all who are alive.

Hell take some of the residents to help you.

They left traces. That immediately discredits them as "smart". A smart murderer would not have left a body behind to tell the tale of its murder.

And you have made no progress, I'd say the murderer has a leg up.
