I think even *I* might have missed the part where you definitely decided on a Ph.D. I think I was imagining the old plan, just a Master's Degree and teach commmunity college...?
However, I am betting that you will quickly come to love your new location. I know that not all of your kids are outgoing, but I think they can handle it.

And why did I do so? I finally admitted to myself that the only reason I wasn't going for a Ph.D. was that I didn't think I could come up with an original research idea, which was a dumb reason not to do it. If being around KosherTurkey has taught me anything, it's that you should always try to do something you're interested in, even if you think you don't have a particularly large chance of success.

Oh, and most people don't get academic jobs straight out of school; they have to post-doc first. So it might be as much as 8 years for me. That's a long time to hold on to a house as a rental.
