Rowland S Howard 1959-2009

It's funny how deeply the death of someone you've never met can affect you. I'm still too upset to do this justice, but I needed to mark his passing.

Rowland S Howard has been my favourite guitarist from the first time I heard the Birthday Party back in 1988. He had a distinctive style, shimmering but fractured, which set off his unusual vocals on everything from the Birthday Party through These Immortal Souls and his collaborations with Lydia Lunch and Nikki Sudden, to his solo albums, the second of which was released in November to critical acclaim. In a fair world he'd be as rich and famous as his old band mate Nick Cave, except I'm not sure he would really have been that bothered.
