One of my clearest memories as a child was while we were traveling. My father loved to travel, and he was always looking for ways to save money, so we traveled around the country by van. I've seen around 40 of the 50 states, I estimate.
The memory I have is one night, in the dark. We were at a rest stop so my father could rest his eyes to continue traveling all night. I lay awake, hearing the light snores of my father and mother's fitful rest in the front. My dad left the radio on, and was playing one of the two tapes I remember: Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water album. Listening to the crash of percussion and the repeating na-na-nas of The Boxer, I decided then that I liked Simon and Garfunkel, and that has become the anthem of travel for me.
I have the exact same tape still, and I will have it in my tape deck.
