Ooo...yeah. I'm all for teaching independence to children at a point where those steps are age appropriate. I've never seen that as getting across the idea of independence so much as abandonment or not being loved/cared for. I think little ones start their first steps towards learning independence at around toddlerhood. Up until then, you really need to respond.

We had a cradle gifted to use that is a functional family heirloom built by a great uncle that my grandmother gave me. We got it home a couple weeks ago and we couldn't fit it through the door to the bedroom. Now our bedroom is just across the hall from the nursery. Literally we are nine feet apart from bed to crib, but the idea of our son being in the other room for the first couple months...yikes! We got a really nice, quasi-portable small bassinet that fits right up against our bed. That way when he wakes up at night, neither of us have to really wake up too much for a feeding and he knows I'm nearby for his first few months. We'll eventually graduate to the crib. :)
