My Thoughts on Slavery

If I lived in the time period of the civil war I would be an abolitionist. I believe that slavery is wrong for the reasons this country was originally founded on. The men who founded this country and wrote the Declaration of Independence believed that all men where created equal under god, it is wrong to rule many out for there ethnicity. Slavery is am old idea, one that was out of date and irrelevant to those times. Many slaver owners would argue that slavery was in the bible there for that justified it. But in fact, slavery in biblical times was much different then slavery in the first part of American history.
In the first part of Leviticus it explains that if say one could not feed his family or provide for oneself then he or she could sell themselves into slavery, and if made that decision then all your food, shelter, and medical expense would be paid for in exchange for service for seven years, and when the duration of seven years came to an end, you could choose to have your freedom back, or stay a slave for a longer time period. Another contrast to slavery then and now is that it was against the law to beat your slaves, and a sin before god, because slaves where seen as people, not as goods or nothing more than a tool. Americas view on slavery was so much more barbaric and cruel than how it was originally established. It appears to me like America needed a labor force and would go by any means to acquire it, even if it meant enslaving Africans against there will. Even if it means treating them as if they are more like an object than a person. Even if it means treating them worse than animals.
My person beliefs are that if someone chooses to sell them selves into a slavery similar to that one in which the bible speaks of in Leviticus is fine. In my opinion I would much rather be someone’s slave for a period of time than be living on the street homeless wondering where my next meal is going to be. Slavery in that sense, and only if they are treated as people rather than property, seems like shelter for the poorest. I think a system like that would actually improve our society, it is more like indentured service rather than slavery. If American society had a institution like similar to that then it would greatly reduce welfare cost because if you chose to sell your service to another person you would be under there welfare. The biggest plus to it would be that it would greatly reduce the number of homeless in America. It would make for cheap labor source that could also build up our country’s infrastructure. Then again on the other side, I admit that a system like this could never work in our society, people would take it to far by possibly taking advantage of there slaves, or the slaves taking advantage of there masters. There would always be instances of people taking things too far.
And yes slavery was one of the worst time periods in American history, but if we never had slavery our economy would not be built up as much as it is now, we would definitely not be the world super power. A lot of this country’s strength was built on the backs of slaves and other groups of people who’s lives we have ruined. So that is one thing you have to ask yourself, was slavery worth all the privileges we have as Americans? Maybe, maybe not. One thing that I am unhappy with it wasn’t for slavery then we would not have racial discrimination, and if we didn’t have racial discrimination then Pottsboro might win some football games.
