Fic Meme Day 3
I mean, it's only been a month since my last meme post, that's a totally reasonable timeframe for posting. :P
Every day (consecutively or not), post about one of your fanworks:
1. Something old
2. Something new
3. Something you made for someone else
4. Something you made just for yourself
5. Something for a large fandom/pairing/character
6. Something for a small fandom/pairing/character
7. Something you're just really proud of
I've written a lot of fics as gifts for people, but Best Laid Plans sticks in my mind because at the time of posting I felt vaguely embarrassed by it, and it took me a long time to get over it. There's nothing really even embarrassing about it! It's just...well, let me tell you about it.
At the time, DC, and specifically Batfamily, was my primary fandom. And if you look at what else I've written in the fandom, you'll notice I have a niche, and my niche is Things That Are Dark. Injury, character death, and/or mental illness are consistent themes. Yep. Cheery! (The one exception is Reconciliation, but that's a Teen Titans fic, and Teen Titans is allowed to be fluffy. This did not stop me from killing Batman in my other Teen Titans fic, which more or less proves my point.)
And then realpestilence had a birthday, and I offered a gift ficlet and asked for a prompt, and she gave me "Bruce/Dick and unnecessary jealousy." I'd never written Bruce/Dick before, and I'd not written this sort of straight-forward slash in the Batfandom, so. It was an interesting challenge for me to write. And it was fun! I enjoy challenging myself! And at the end of the process I had a funny, schmoopy, adorable little Batman fic, and I was pleased with it.
But also REALLY WEIRDED OUT. I mean, happy fluff? In Angela's Batfic?? It's just not ME. And I guess maybe I had some sort of snooty, nose-in-the-air, My Batfic is Srs Bizniss kind of attitude, so. The fic was very well received, and I was pleased, but I felt weird about it. I distinctly remember becoming acquainted with a fandom person much later who was like, "Hey, you wrote Best Laid Plans, that was one of the first Bruce/Dick fics I ever read! I liked it a lot!" and I was pleased but also kind of ;ahdkfl;ahjfd embarrassed because nooooooooo, this fic isn't representative of me as a ~Writer~!!
...But then I got into other fandoms and I wrote more gift fics and I wrote more fluffy things and I got over myself, The End.
