Gaila groaned and rolled over, fully intending to shut off her PADD and go back to sleep for the five minutes she had left before she had to get up for class. She took a moment to see what idiot was messaging her this early.
It was Jim. She rolled over and sat up, excited to see that he had sent her a message. She opened it.
Hey, I know it’s early, but I was wondering if you wanted to get breakfast. I got a message saying I don’t have to TA. I’m free all day. Want to do something?
She quickly typed up her message.
Sorry honey, I have to lead workshops in engineering for the whole day. I am an extra credit addict. How about I take you out tomorrow night though? Sound good?
The response came quickly.
Sound good? Why would I ever turn down an offer from a gorgeous girl to take me out?
I’ll pick you up at 19:00 tomorrow.
She grinned and stretched luxuriously under her covers before getting out of bed and quickly typing up an urgent message from the science labs to Professor Spock. Just because she wouldn’t get to see Jim during the day didn’t mean that he could.
SPOCK
He had spent the day dealing with corrupted files in the science department’s computer system. He would have suspected a virus if they hadn’t had the best security systems reworked for them every year. He would have suspected a student hacking the projects, but nothing was taken or destroyed, the files had just been run through a complex translation program of the likes he’d never seen, so that every other sentence of the reports and projects were in a different language.
It was a clever program and not difficult to undo, just tedious and time consuming. Gaila had certainly made up for what he had done to her. But he didn’t feel like he had been gotten even with. He felt wronged.
He couldn’t stop thinking about slender, green fingers wrapped around pale, callused ones-those same fingers running through dark blond hair, light green lips against red ones. He could feel the jealousy build up, a slow burn.
When he attempted to message Jim, the message came right back to him. Gaila must have blocked his messages from getting to Jim. He had to practice breathing exercises to keep himself from snapping the PADD in two.
He had intended to ask Jim out on a date and instead he was subjected to tedious work, stuck imagining all the things Gaila could be doing to Jim right then.
It was 21:05 by the time Spock had untangled the code and restored all the programs and their coding to Standard. It was past the appropriative time for a Professor to seek out a cadet.
But that didn’t stop Spock from going to Jim’s dorm room and chiming for entrance. The door slid open revealing neither Jim nor his roommate, Cadet McCoy, but another a male cadet, his face flushed from alcohol.
“Shit, it’s a professor,” the cadet said, stumbling back to reveal a few more cadets, several beer cans, and Jim Kirk. Jim was lyingon his back in jeans and a low t-shirt that had ridden up, showing his toned abdominal muscles.
Jim lazily turned his head and grinned up at Spock. “Hello professor. Come to write us up?”
“No.”
“Calm down,” said Jim to the cadet who was desperately shoving empty cans under the bed, “there’s nothing to worry about.
“So, what are you here for, professor? What do you want?” Jim’s tone was teasing as if he could sense Spock’s inappropriate thoughts about Jim spread out on the floor.
“While I will not write any of you up,” Spock said addressing the group, “the consumption of alcohol beverages in the Academy dorms is against regulations. If this is not your room I suggest you depart immediately.”
The cadets scrambled to get out of the room, presumably before Spock changed his mind and wrote them all up. Soon only Jim was left, still sprawled loose limbed on the floor smirking up at Spock as he watched him. Spock walked closer until his boots were almost touching Jim’s hip.
Jim licked his lips. “Like what you see?”
“I believe you are already aware you are quite aesthetically pleasing.” Spock said.
“Yeah, but that’s not a real answer and you know it.” Jim pushed up on his elbows to better meet Spock’s eyes. Jim’s tone was still teasing, “Are you, Professor Spock, physically attracted to me based on my aesthetically pleasing appearance?”
“Cadet Kirk, I did not come to room to engage in a discussion about your physical appearance.”
“Didn’t think so. Why’d you come then?”
“I had intended to give you something earlier today, but I was prevented from seeing by a most curious malfunction within the databases.”
“Yeah? You have some projects you want me to look over?”
“No Jim, this is something of a more personal nature.”
Jim cocked his head to the side, curious, “What it is?”
Spock pulled out his PADD and handed it to Jim. “I sent the tickets to your account so you will be able to access and utilize them.”
Jim rubbed his eyes and squinted slightly at the information on the PADD before looking up at Spock in amazement.
“Did you really get me two tickets to the Federation’s yearly engineering fair? The fair where all types of new technology and ideas and processes from all sorts of different planets and cultures are shown off by their creators, all of whom are super smart and amazing?”
“While those aren’t the words I would use to describe the event, you are essentially correct.”
Jim waved his hand dismissively. “Semantics.”
“There are two tickets here. Is this you inviting me to go with you?”
“No, Jim. Those tickets are a gift, you may bring whoever you want or you may sell it. Those tickets are yours to do with as you wish.”
Jim looked up at Spock with wide bewildered eyes. “This is…you got me a present? Why?”
“It seemed like something you would very much enjoy and I wished to give you the chance to experience this event.”
Jim set the PADD down and stood up, a little shaky on his feet. Jim moved into Spock’s personal space, which alarmed and excited him in equal measures. Before he could determine Jim’s motives the cadet had wrapped his arms around Spock and pressed their bodies together.
“Jim-”
“Sorry,” he said, but he didn’t move, keeping Spock wrapped in his embrace, Spock found their positions incredibly agreeable and did not mind. “Just, thank you.”
“You are wecome.” Spock expected this to be the end of the hug, but Jim continued to hold him close.
“I can’t remember the last time, if it ever, someone just gave me something like that, without expecting anything in return. I just-it was very nice of you. So, thanks”
“You are quite welcome Jim,” his tone was soft and gentle, almost affectionate.
Jim shifted in Spock’s arms, brought his hand up, and cupped Spock’s face, rubbing his thumb gently over Spock’s cheekbone. Spock closed his eyes and leaned into the pleasant sensation.
“Would you,” began Jim, when the door slid open, revealing a very shocked looking Cadet McCoy.
“Professor Spock?” McCoy asked.
Spock stood up quickly. “Excuse me. I was just…”
McCoy rolled his eyes. “Save it. I’m sure I’ll hear all about it from this one,” he said gesturing at Jim who handed him his PADD with a small smile.
“Night, Spock.”
“Goodnight, Jim.”
Spock turned and left quickly before he could do anything unwise, like walk over and kiss Jim goodnight.
GAILA
Gaila would happily clean bathrooms for Nyota for the rest of time because she was a genius. Jim had just kissed her. The hamburgers had been perfect, dinner had been great, they had talked and laughed and had as good a time as they always did.
Then, when they walked out of the restaurant, Jim had stretched his arms back over his head and asked, “Where to?”
Gaila had pulled a thin black blindfold out of her back pocket and asked, “Do you trust me?”
He had grinned wide and nodded. Once the thin piece of fabric had been secured she grabbed his hand and pulled him through the city turning heads and earning wolf whistles as they went.
When she had pulled the blindfold off his face and he saw where they were he grinned and kissed her on lips. Bathroom duty for the rest of eternity. It was a quick chaste kiss, but his mouth felt so good against hers, even briefly.
“I have always wanted to come here,” he whispered in her ear, looking around them with wide eyes.
“And tonight you might,” she whispered back, making him laugh at the innuendo.
He looked delicious in his jeans and button-up with the rolled up sleeves under the lights of the club, he caught her gaze and grabbed her hand squeezing it and smiled at her warmly. She smiled back before looking away, suddenly nervous.
She liked Jim more than any other person she had met at the Academy and here she was bringing him to a strip club, like he was just someone she was trying to show a good time. She always tried to start relationships with something sex-related and it never worked. Then she remembered that her attraction to Jim had started with friendship. She looked back up at him meeting his eyes again.
“You okay?” Jim asked her.
“Yes. Why do you ask?”
“You just looked a little hesitant or something.”
She laughed a little self-deprecatingly. “I was just thinking that this was an odd place to bring someone on a first date.”
“Oh, is that what this is?” He was still smiling at her, so she took it as a good sign.
“Yes, is that okay?”
“Yeah, I guess. But why now?”
“What?”
“Gaila, we flirt all the time. I can tell when you’re upset because on those days you don’t grab my ass. I know I’m not…Well I’m not exactly sure why anyone would want to date me. And you never showed any interest besides friendly flirting.”
She groaned. “Jim. Of course, I’m interested in you. You read research for fun, and you’re always there for me, you’re my first best friend, and most importantly you’re gorgeous.”
Jim laughed and pulled her into a hug. She leaned her head against his shoulder, before pulling back a bit leaning forward. She pressed her lips to his in a kiss much less chaste than their first. Jim pulled back first.
“Gaila, I really like you, but I’m not sure this is the best idea.”
Damn, Spock, she thought. “Why not?” She asked, caressing his face, taking heart in the fact that he leaned into her touch.
“I’ve never been good at commitment-”
“Jimmy, just because you’ve never been in a serious relationship doesn’t mean you’re bad at commitment. You’re loyal and dedicated in everything you do.”
“But also I’m not sure it would be fair to you start something right now. There’s someone else I’m sort of interested in too and I don’t even know...”
Gaila felt her stomach drop - he wanted Spock. “All right. Can I still attempt to seduce you?”
Jim grinned and grabbed her hand pulling her towards the stage. “Let’s go watch the show.”
Well, it wasn’t a no. Gaila could work with that.
------
They were almost back to the dorms after the show buzzed and turned on from the show. Gaila kept bumping into Jim as they walked, briefly pressing her body against his. And Jim never stopped touching her, playing with her hair, trailing his fingers down her arm.
It was late and dark, but there were other people out and the weather was just the right amount of warm. It almost made her want to stay out all night with Jim, almost as much as she wanted to stay in bed with him all night.
As soon as they got on campus she hip bumped Jim making him lose his balance a bit.
“Whoops,” she said reaching out to stabilizing him and they ended up tumbling into each other a bit. They were completely pressed against each other, their mouths centimeters apart.
Gaila pressed her forehead against Jim’s, but didn’t close the distance. “I want to take you up to my room, but I think it would be a bad idea.”
“I think it sounds like a great idea,” Jim said, seduction leaking into his voice.
“But because I’m a gentleman and don’t want to mar your virtue-” Jim snorted “-why don’t you come back to my room and we can watch a vid with Nyota. She admits to finding you entertaining.”
Jim laughed against her. “Sounds nice, let’s do it.”
They stumbled across the quad to the dorm together.
When they entered the room they found Spock and Nyota sitting on her bed playing chess together. As soon as Nyota set down her piece, Spock immediately reached out to move his, causing their fingers to brush.
Jim froze suddenly next to Gaila. At first she thought it was because he was embarrassed or felt like he’d been caught being a player. But then she got a better look at him and realized he looked more pissed off than anything, which was kind of odd.
Spock looked up an expression that Gaila couldn’t read on his face. Jim stood for a moment longer, he clenched and clenched his fists before he turned to Gaila, completely ignoring Spock.
“Thanks for taking me out tonight, I had a great time,” then he kissed her on the cheek and left.
“What was that about?” asked Nyota.
“I don’t know,” said Gaila, looking at Spock, “But whatever it was keep it up.”
Spock stood up from the bed, ignoring Gaila to speak to Uhura. “Thank you, Cadet. I appreciate your company as always. Have a pleasant night. I apologize for my sudden departure, but I have an urgent matter to attend to.” He strode out swiftly without waiting for a response.
“Males,” said Gaila, “always so dramatic.”
Uhura rolled her eyes and nodded in agreement.
