GAILA

Gaila woke up curled up on the edge of a narrow dorm bed. She stretched, feeling all the pleasant aches in her muscles.  Her movements caused the other occupant of the bed to stir, she stilled and he settled back into sleep, his breath evening out.

She looked over the male human cadet in the bright light of day. Not bad. Not as good his long limbs and dark features had looked in the erratically lit club when she had been wearing her beer goggles, as Jim Kirk liked to say. Although the goggles she had been wearing last night had been made of hard liquor, vodka and another alien drink too, something radioactively pink.

The thought of the liquor she had been drinking reminded her of the state her male companion had been in last night. He had been looking to party - cut loose, go crazy just for one night. She had been part of that just for one night scenario. Which meant it was time to go.

Gaila stepped out of the bed, careful not to wake up the cadet and pulled on the uniform she had been wearing the night before, wrinkling her nose at the faint lingering scent of alcohol.

She left the dorm room and almost walked into a cadet she knew, Brendon. He took in her rumpled appearance, eyed the door she had just left and smirked at her in an unpleasant way, shaking his head in disapproval.

The other week, Brendon had told her that she was his dream girl - perfect with no strings attached but caring and fun. He didn’t really mean it though, didn’t know what he was saying.

The thing about dreams, Gaila knew, was that you never wanted to leave them, wanted to visit them over and over. Gaila wasn’t a dream; she was a fantasy. Once it had been fulfilled, they were done with her.

Gaila moved on quickly, leaving the building as fast as possible. She walked into the sunlight and blinked. She felt awkward and scruffy in the bright light, the way she always did when going out in public wearing the same clothes as the night before without taking a shower or brushing her teeth. She walked forward, projecting confidence, and just smiled at the people who gave her a once over as she made her way back to her dorm.

She had found it worked best to pretend that she doesn’t know what she looked like, with her rumpled clothes and messy hair. Her smile brightened and became genuine when she saw a familiar figure with sleep-mussed blond hair across the way.

“Hey Jim. Wait up,” she called.

He stopped and turned, a smile stealing across his face at seeing her. As their dorms were in the same building, they walked together and got even more stares than before, as Jim’s disarrayed appearance matched hers.

“We sort of look like we got it on in some bushes somewhere and feel asleep,” Gaila commented.

“No, we’d have some leaves in our hair,” Jim said grinning. “I didn’t know you were going out last night. You’re usually down in the labs Thursday nights.”

“It was Jason Stanton’s birthday.”

“Oh. I see.”

Gaila just grinned. They walked in companionable silence for a moment before a thought struck her. “You were in the labs all night. You fell asleep there. You were waiting for me.”

Jim looked down and away from her, almost shyly.  “I was working on the project Professor Williams assigned us. I wanted to know what you were going to do for it.”

She turned over the idea in her mind of Jim Kirk waiting all night for her in the engineering lab, that was always too cold and that smelled of chemicals and grease. “You must have an awful cramp in your neck don’t you?”

“No,” came the quick, automatic answer. He was feeling defensive about falling asleep in the lab for some reason.

“Jim,” she said gently, “you fell asleep on a stool slumped over a lab bench.”

“My neck is fine,” he insisted. Clearly he had stayed up too late, and his brain was sleep-addled otherwise he would have realized that Gaila was angling to offer him a neck massage.

“Oh look,” Gaila said suddenly flinging her arm out in front of Jim, pointing down the path, “it’s Ryan with the lip ring.”

“Where?” Jim asked, whipping his head in the direction Gaila was pointing. “Oh, ow,” he cried out, “My neck!”

“No cramp, huh?” Gaila smirked.

“Ryan wasn’t even over there was he? Since when are you such a jerk?” he asked massaging the side of his neck.

“I must be spending too much time with you.” She stuck her tongue out at him impishly.

He pulled a face at her.

“Very mature, Kirk. You know, if you don’t have anything going on, you could come to my room and I would give you a neck massage to make up for it.”

“Yeah?” Their eyes met and Gaila lost her train of thought for a minute.

“Yeah,” she breathed. This was her friend Jim. Not just some cadet whose fantasy she was fulfilling. But he looked so good all sleep rumpled, his light skin looking warm and inviting in the sunlight.

Jim smiled warmly at her, “Okay, yeah. I don’t think I have-” he cut himself off, thinking. “Shit, I completely forgot. I have to go,” he said turning in the other direction.

“Oh, your T.A thing?”

“Yeah, sorry,” He called before running off.

“Don’t worry about it,” she said, even though it was too far to have heard her. She sighed and ran a hand through her curls pushing them back from her face.

When she returned to her dorm room, she stepped in the shower and let the water run over her. As she gently scrubbed the remnants of the previous night off of her skin, her mind was filled with thoughts of Jim Kirk falling asleep on lab benches and engineering projects.

As she towel dried her mass of red curls, she came to a conclusion. She was going to seduce Jim Kirk into a relationship and he was going to like it.

SPOCK

Even though he was a professor, and one with limited social interaction at that, Commander Spock still heard rumors. So when his new T.A walked in with his clothes rumpled, hair mussed, and obviously suffering the symptoms of a late night, Spock felt a little shiver of jealousy go through him.

It would be somewhat inappropriate to engage in a relationship with a cadet, but it was hard not to entertain the idea while watching Cadet Kirk bite at his lower lip in concentration while providing feedback on papers regarding the intricacies of interspecies ethics.

Kirk stood in front of his desk looking contrite. Spock projected dissatisfaction at the cadet, all the while contemplating different scenarios in which he would indicate his disapproval. All of the scenarios culminated in the removal of the cadet’s clothing and Professor Spock demonstrating that Kirk no longer had any reason to be late to see him because Spock could meet his needs more than adequately.

Then something the cadet said broke through his musings. Spock raised an eyebrow, “You feel asleep working on a project in the engineering lab?” He took a closer look at Cadet Kirk and sure enough he was carrying a book bag

“Yeah, sorry. I kind of look a mess and I’m really tired. Sorry I’m late. I can stay later today to make up for it if you want.”

“As there is little work to be done today, you may use this time to catch up on your sleep if you wish.”

“If it’s all the same to you, I’d rather just stay,” He said with a smile, setting his bag on the floor, and sprawling out in a chair.

“That would be acceptable, Cadet Kirk.”

“You can call me Jim, you know.”

Spock felt far more pleased than he should at that inappropriate suggestion. “Jim,” he said, trying out the shape and sound of the name. He had thought the name often, but had never said it aloud before. Cadet Kirk-Jim, smiled at the use his name. “As your mental abilities at not at their optimal level for grading papers, perhaps you would be amenable to a game of chess.”

“Sure. But don’t think I don’t know what you’re trying to do.”

“And what am I trying to do, Jim?” He asked while pulling out the game.

“You’re taking advantage of my less than optimal mental abilities due to my loss of sleep. You think you can easily beat me but you’re wrong.”

“Is that so?”

“It is,” Jim said with a flash of mirth in his eyes.

As he set up the board, Spock got a pleasant jolt when he realized that he been engaged in flirting with Jim. The game was fun, their camaraderie easy. As he watched Jim studying the board in concentration before making the winning move, he came to the conclusion that he was going to get Cadet James Kirk to agree to a romantic relationship with him and make him enjoy every minute of the seduction.

After the highly enjoyable and mentally stimulating chess game with the cadet, Spock went to search out his one friend who was a cadet. Perhaps she would have advice on how to secure Kirk’s interest.

He spotted her sitting on the lawn with her Orion roommate, Cadet Gaila. He sat down beside them.

“Hi Spock,” said Cadet Nyota Uhura.

Gaila waved at him cheerily, her red curls bouncing with the movement.

“Hello, Cadet Nyota, Cadet Gaila.”

“What caused you to seek out my company?” Nyota asked, getting straight to the point. It was one of her characteristics that made their friendship work so well.

Spock was experiencing a strange reluctance to tell her despite seeking her out for this very purpose. “I find myself…intrigued by a certain cadet and I desire to know, if based on your observations of him if you would believe him to be amenable to a relationship with a male, a Vulcan one.”

Nyota cocked her head in curiosity and smiled gently at him.

“What is his name?”

Spock took a small breath. “The name of the cadet with whom I wish to pursue a romantic relationship is James Kirk.”

Next to him, Gaila made a small surprised sound and Nyota started to laugh and shake her head in what seemed to be disbelief. “He does like males as well as females, but you’re going to have to get in line, Spock,” she told him.

“That metaphor implies that there are several others that are also interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with the cadet.”

“Well, at least one other that I know of,” said Nyota, fighting to hide a smile.

“Whoever they are, I am sure that I am a more suitable candidate and that Jim will choose me over them.”

“Unlikely,” said Gaila, “as the other ‘candidate’ is myself.”

“You are set in this course, even though you are likely to be unsuccessful?”

“I am and I will not be,” Gaila said coolly.

Nyota suddenly looked nervous. “If one of you gets him to agree to a relationship the other isn’t going to try to steal him away right? Because that would be terrible.”

“I would not stoop to such a thing,” said Spock.

“Neither would I,” said Gaila. “But unless he is officially yours, I make no promises.”

“I will follow the same standard,” Spock said.

“I look forward to holding hands with him in front of you,” Gaila said, making Spock bristle before she got up and flounced off.
