Today (Monday) is Victoria Day here. The city is so deserted that one might think an epidemic wiped out the population. I've never seen Toronto like this. It's bizarre. Victoria Day appears to be a bigger deal here (city sponsored fireworks) than in Vancouver. Maybe because Toronto is closer to UK and there are lots of monarchists here? The weekend was full of eating...
- Homemade tabouleh - never made this before, but tasted it a few times previously. MEAH, I actually hate parsley because I feel like a cow munching on grass whenever I eat it. Next time I'm totally revamping the recipe. It'll be Asianized with a Latin foundation! I want to replace the parsley completely with cilantro (yum!) and the bulgur with quinoa.
- Soma chocolate - a high-end chocolatier in the Distillery District; highly overrated.
- Arizona Pomegranate Ice Tea - YUM! AMAZING!
- Brunch buffet - on Front Street near St Lawrence Market for less than $20. Absolutely divine spread of food! Chipotle mussels, roast beef, salmon, crab salad, BBQ chicken, made-to-order omelettes, and about a dozen fancy cakes for dessert. Must return!
- Pomegranate sorbet - D took me to The Big Chill, which is a very popular ice cream place on College Street. There was a long queue! I'm not sure if that was due to 1) the 27C heat, 2) closure of many shops in town, or 3) the quality of its ice cream. Anyway, I had pomegranate sorbet and espresso ice cream. AMAZING!
- Semi-homemade pizza - I generally make my own pizzas from scratch but did not have time today. Groceries stores were all closed today, so I had the novel idea of buying straight from pizzerias. One would think this would be an easy task. I went to 3 different pizzerias and they looked at me as if I was asking for uranium to make missiles. Did they seriously think I was trying to copy their recipe? I wanted to say, "Please, I've had your pizzas and they suck!" Finally one pizzeria with very pathetic looking pizzas on display sold me a bag of dough for $4. It made a pretty decent dinner with riesling!
