I read an article in La's Self Magazine about organ donation that really made me think. For those of you who read this (very few people) who don't know about receiving organ transplants or donating (hopefully even less people), in order to get a transplant you have to be on a list where you're ranked on things like severity of health problem, age.... The article wrote about two people that both needed liver transplants. One of them found out he needed one so him and his family did a lot of publicity stuff to get one and 4 weeks after he found out he needed a transplant he got one (people can choose who their organs will be given to). The other person written about was a woman who'd had liver problems since she was born. She was on the organ transplant list for years before she actually got one even though she was more sick than the guy I wrote about earlier. Ethically is it wrong to campaign to save your own life? The article pointed out that things like posting billboards with pictures of yourself and finding a way to get on TV to plea for an organ turns the whole concept of receiving a transplant into a popularity or creativity contest. Still, wouldn't anyone would do everything they could to save his/her own life or a loved ones life despite the fact that it is not "fair?" I know I would.
Moral of the story: become an organ donor
