OK, this is my first post on the live journal. And I hope I can get a few answers.
I know many readers here are mothers. So let me tell you something that bothers me.
My son Joey, who is seven-year-old, is very afraid of dogs.
When he was born in 2003, we had a big hybrid German Shepard dog at home. Joey had absolute so problem with that, actually

My first thought was what Loreen said. Your big German Shepherd (which scares some people to death) was a friendly companion to your Joey. But small, yappy dogs move too fast, and are often nervous. You never know what they are going to do.
The only dog that ever bit me was a small dog. He chased me when I was riding my bike and bit my ankles. (The movement of my bike probably scared him). I don't know why he was able to run loose.
I've always loved big dogs, and always had them "until" I met Jack who is a terrier of some sort, probably fox terrier.
Here's the thing, yesterday on Christmas Day, I got to my daughter's house to find that her dog was having puppies. She had 5 when I arrived, and before I left she had a total of 11, ten lived. I felt I was witnessing a miracle, and I like this dog much better than I did before, because she was quiet and not jumping up or running around (they keep their dogs outside) and because she was such a good mother. She was calm even though a houseful of people kept coming into the laundry room to check on her and even hold her puppies.
I wish Joey had been there to see this miracle, and to see how small and vulnerable they are. I was going to say "helpless" but they are pretty savvy about moving around and finding mama for food and warmth.
I hope you will show Joey all the books and movies slowly, and not make everything he sees and hears be about dogs. That's a lot of pressure for a 7 year old.
Love of dogs, especially big dogs, is a large part of my life, so I hope that someday he can again enjoy them, and avoid the ones who make him nervous. Let us know how this goes for you and your family, ok?
Hugs,
Judy

Thank you very much for your reply. Happy holidays!
We took Joey to the Xmas party at his cousin's house on the Xmas Day, and they have a three-month-old puppy. Yet it is fast, lousy, and barks a lot. His cousin kept it on the porch for most of the day, but then other kids wants to play with it so they let him in.
Joey was very nervous, and hid himself behind me or his daddy. It doesn't help when his cousin's child told Joey that the puppy actually bit his hand once...I guess the puppy is just playing, but it definitely scared Joey...Finally he hid in the cousin's child's room and the two kids play some new games together.
Afterwards I asked Joey to write a journal about the Xmas party, and he actually wrote 'I am afraid of the dog in my cousin's house'. So I guess there is still a long way to go for him to conquer his fear!
