Hi I've come across a journal article in which the author, writing in English, made reference to "Barbarian Tribes" and provided as its Pinyin "fan zu ( Read more... )

番族。
番人 is barbarian.
番 was used frequently with things associated with foreigners, westerners. i would guess that 番薯 is one example.

They have a word for it: Sinocentrism.

It's not a fully fledged theory like Said's Orientalism if you mean it that way, but you easily come across words like Sinocentric and Sinocentrism in history books about China's view of the world order.
