Sending mid-challenge good wishes to my Yuletide Author.
Just want to say, again, don't even to worry about making me happy. Do something in any of these fandoms, and you'll make my Yuletide.
(Now I ramble on a bit. It's meant to be encouraging, if you are stuck, lost or panicking. Don't read it if you think it will mess you up.)
Don't let my plotty convoluted prompts scare you. "Character A has a beer and thinks about life" is the plot of half the Highlander stories I've ever read, and I love those.
I guess I did mostly ask for happy Genfic. I should say, when I signed up, I had just finished an incredibly depressing novel and all I could think was, "Please, just give me something fun. And no demeaning or abusive relationships; I think I've gone off sex altogether." I'm over it now. I am perfectly happy with dark, creepy or thoughtful stories, and any pairings that appeal to you.
Imagine you are only writing for yourself. If you pulled this fandom out of a hat and sat down to write, what would you do? Unless it involves raping kittens, I would probably like that story.
American Gods: You don't really need to explain the ending. (If that goes to NYR, I'll be embarrassed about it all year.) I get it - something about the land, we worship the land. I'm unconvinced. What, all of North and South America, for all of human history? There have been a lot of different people here, and plenty of cultures worship nature or have overpowering landscapes. But that's just me wanting to argue the themes of the book; you don't have to. I do love this book; I love the moody, noirish feel of it, and playing "Spot the God", and the fact that I read it last summer and it's still gnawing away at my brain.
(BTW, I'd recommend Anansi Boys, and the book-on-tape read by Lenny Henry - his voice is half the joy of it.)
Holmes: I guess it's little unfair to request 'less Sadist Holmes mocks Idiot Watson', seeing as it is, you know, canon. I just usually like to see power imbalances evened out, one way or another. I am happy with anything from stories closely following the text (or undermining some of Conan Doyle's Victorian attitudes) to stories vaguely inspired by the characters. Or, banter over dinner. I am ridiculously easy to please in this fandom.
Eureka: I didn't dislike Season 2, I just didn't love the season finale. (The show's not over, is it?) It also seemed like there were many missed opportunities; did we ever finally get a scene that dealt with the events of the S1 finale, of Jack's missing memories and Henry's anger at him? I was waiting for those.
I can't tell if we're supposed to dislike Jo's new guy; the one scene of him dismissing her abilities and making her feel insecure seems to be all we know about their relationship. (I also hate it when women change their entire lives and beliefs based on some guy they're dating. I don't think that was the intention; I think they just wanted to undo her hair. I know, Jo has as much right to be girly as anyone. At least her relationship with Zoe was fun.)
I do just love the show, though, and everyone in it. Unlike most of the things I read or watch, this is a place I'd actually want to go. (I read that the woman who plays Beverly was finishing her degree in molecular biology while filming, and would bring in her textbooks to use as props. I don't know why, but I just love that.)
Discworld: Honestly? Anything at all. The many, many prompts were because I was trying to list everyone I'd be happy to see (and I still left out the Witches, the Librarian, the Igors, the Golems...) If you want to spend any time in the Discworld universe, I will happily ride along.
Thank you again. I'll be traveling, but I hope I'll be able to get to a computer after the stories are posted. It just might take a few days. (On December 24th, we usually stay up until midnight to see if my mom's cat will talk. I cling to the hope that this is a Catholic thing, and not just my own crazy family.) Whatever you are doing this time of year, I hope you have a wonderful time.
