I want to be an archer

I had a dream the other day about shooting bows and arrows. So I thought,, Hey, that'd be lots of fun. Rebecca and people have been talking to me for a while about the Society for Creative Anachronism, and I decided to join. I emailed my local welcome wagon person...still no response. So I've been reading about SCA for newbies all day yesterday and today. How to make garb (period clothes), rules for combat, etc. It excites me so much. Now I just need to find out how to get all the fun toys so I can shoot arrows, sew tunics, etc. I wish I was still in DC so I'd at least have friends around me. It's awfully boring and lonely at home, but also lazy. Figure I'll throw myself into some flight of fancy, it'll be good for me.

So I need a persona, and have been exploring. Archery, my first thought was the English archers (all those stories). So I know the biggest victory of the English archers (at least that I know of) was whooping some French ass (not challenging, but anyway) at Agincourt. It was a battle in the 1300's where the Brits, predominantly unmounted archers, were outnumbered (estimates vary between a 3:2 ratio and a 4:1 ratio) by French soldiers, mainly mounted, but alsoi heavily peasant foot soldiers. Due to a heavy rain and brilliant tactics by King Henry IV, the Brits routed the French. So I think the 1300's England is a good time & place for me. They wore light armor (leather), fought with swords as well as bows, and just rock my socks. However, I am also considering a Jewish persona, only because it makes the observance thing easier. But I have an active enough imagination to be someone in fantasy very different from my actual self.

So until next time, I remain yours: William at Linden
