Ginny Drabble

Sooo barrelofapen challenged me to write a drabble without sex, angst, or darkness to get a better feel for the character that I'm writing. She has a point; I really don't like 2-D characterization and it's good to really know all aspects of a character's personality and what they are capable of. Here goes.

Flying felt like falling.

Ginny loved to close her eyes and feel the wind whipping her hair back and cooling her cheeks. She would dip the tip of her broom and cascade toward the green field beneath her, just because she could.

Ginny never understood her classmates like Colin Creevey, approaching his broom with wide eyes and barely kicking off more than a couple of feet from the ground. As if the ground were safe.

She always felt the safest on a broom. A broom Ginny could escape with, make loops in the air with, lock her knees and soar upside down with. It was better than magic in its own way, because magic never caused her heart to rise to her throat, chills that formed goosebumps on her forearms and legs, a warmth to spread through her chest that just shouldn't happen in the late fall chill.

Some nights she would sneak her broom to the top of the Astronomy Tower and jump off. The brilliant dots of starlight made the sky seem darker, and she felt like she were falling into it, falling up instead of down.

Aaand yeah I think that was longer than what a drabble is supposed to be, but who cares? :D

EDIT: I just realized I called this drabble 'Ginny's Broomstick.' XD Get your mind out the gutter, woman!
