I haven't seen Wanted yet, but man, are people (especially the high-profile critics) expecting too much in movies nowadays? I admit I have this problem with comic book movies, but then again, I think it's safe to say that it's similar with movies based on (popular) novels; especially to those who expect precise representations of mythology and characterization. I understand that certain adaptations would not work at all since the product would just come out campy. But can you blame the other parties who are compulsive and have strict attention to detail?
Anyway, that's another conversation for another time. What I wanted to say is more blunt... what I don't understand is how come there are slews of horror movie remakes (and the genre itself getting plenty of films produced), yet over-the-top action movies are being produced less? IMHO, there are only four that I know of (right off the bat) in this decade that are noteworthy: Shoot 'Em Up, Live Free or Die Hard (Unrated, of course), Rambo, and Punisher: War Zone. Yeah, I know I get people saying "...get with the times, Rob!" I admit that I have severe cases of nostalgia. On the other hand, thanks to overpaid (understatement, I know) critics and people who blindly accept and follow said critics' opinion (instead of forming their own, of course), over-the-top action movies seem to be a dying breed. Moreover, it doesn't help when said critics pan such movies.
Damn those kids, only watching pussified, politically correct PG-13 crap being produced today. Hell, even some PG-13 films back then were pretty entertaining and over-the-top. In addition, are there even any noteworthy badasses in films from this decade (other than the aforementioned films)? I think you all know what I'm trying to get at here, and of course, I acknowledge well-written and directed films; those are for another conversation as well.
In short, why the hate for over-the-top action movies? Man, does Charles Bronson need to come back from the dead and school these youngsters and post-modern, politically correct critics... if he doesn't blast 'em away, ha!
(Yeah, you could say Punisher War Zone instigated this rant... only $4 million over the weekend, what the shit? I have a feeling I am never going to see anything produced from that franchise ever again.)
