The Amazing Adventures Of The Rainbow Cake

Last Friday it was one of my friends' 18th birthday and I decided to make her a cake. I'd seen this amazing cake idea, and so I decided to try it out (not with the recipe from that blog - just using a normal Victoria Sandwich cake recipe and normal food colouring).

Here is a picture of the original idea:

I found it quite difficult to get the colours really bright - the 'red' was actually pink - and I seemed to use an awful lot of food colouring (when I was colouring the icing afterwards I put in a small amount thinking I'd need to put in more but it coloured nicely straight away!) but I am really pleased with how it turned out! I decorated it with blue icing and Flake pieces.

The whole cake minus a slice:

And The Slice:

The colours I used were blue, purple, yellow, green, orange and an attempt at red. The purple and blue worked the best, I think, as well as the the yellow - but it helps that the mixture was almost yellow to start with. The orange and 'red' blended in a bit, and in the picture you can't see any green at all!

I tasted a piece (that exact piece in fact!) and it tasted exactly like normal cake - I was afraid the food colouring would have 'damaged' it slightly - and my friend said they finished the cake when her cousins came round and everyone liked it!

I'm definitely going to try this again! I'll probably try and make the red properly red and maybe use more cake mixture so the colours actually go in layers rather than blobs - although it does look quite cool like this! It's fun anyway, and that's what matters! XD
