we're ok

Family is ok. House is ok. We have no power, still on boiling water alert unless new info has come in recently. Fresh food is gone. House is hot but we spend a lot of time on the patio.
Banana trees got pretty smashed, but the immature bananas were still there when the storm passed. One of Dad's palm trees got knocked over, but we set it up and propped it with 2x4s left over from putting in the post-Rita fence replacement. (BTW, that guy who put up our fence did a fantastic job. While neighbors had theirs coming down all over the place, our fence is in beautiful condition.)
FEMA sucks, our Republican governor is an idiot, parts of Galveston and Bolivar Peninsula literally washed away. People who came through the storm without a problem are being injured or killed from carbon monoxide due to unsafe generator use. Driving is a trial because so many traffic lights are out or down, and downed power lines make it that much more hazardous.
In all, my family has been very lucky and we hope to weather the rest of the power outage in pretty decent shape. We are trying very hard not to read anything into the fact that it seems like more of the wealthy neighborhoods are getting power and services back before our side of town where it's mostly working class immigrant folks. What can I say, we get cynical as we sit around listening to three radio stations for information.

Radio DJs and TV reporters got kind of punchy toward the end, all the weatherpeople trying too hard to be Dan Rather, and sometimes we just wanted to smack them around, too.  But they braved a lot of hazardous stuff to get the news so I can't really be too upset over it. The governor doesn't get that excuse.

I am at work (in case you couldn't tell) where the university has its own power station and never lost power during the storm. We have a lot of stuff to do here, but I will try to update more as I can.

I kept a pen and paper journal by flashlight and daylight during the storm and after, so probably in the next few days most of that will get transcribed here. Also coming soon: photos.

houston, recovery, home, texas, dude this is pretty fucked up right here, family, emergency preparedness, weather, life as we know it
