Today has been another productive (though tiring) day in the garden. We put in day lilies, a pink coneflower (the only one I could find...) and some bulbs - hyacinth and daffodil. I have more daffodils to plant, plus tulips and snowdrops. We have another small bed to fill, the spot in front of the porch where the yew used to be, and some space next to the porch in the main bed left also. I'd like to put in another couple of summer blooming plants, like more coneflowers, if I can find some that don't look half dead.
Tuesday, Jim's dad is going to bring over his van and help us get a load of mulch and some bricks. We priced brick the other day, and it may run us several hundred dollars, but I'm looking at this as an investment in the house.
For the bed in front of the porch, I would like to buy some cool-looking lawn ornament and surround it by the tulips and maybe some lilies in spring. That would spice it up. The consensus seems to be that I need to visit Gringo Jones... so maybe next week, after we get the big things (brick, mulch) done. One of the nice things about bulbs is that I can keep them for another month and don't need to get them all planted this weekend. Our neighbor told us the squirrels get a lot of theirs, so I may need to plant more than I think I need.
Now I'm exhausted, but things are coming along really well, and I'm optimistic that it will look nice. If 75% of this stuff blooms next year, I'll be thrilled. If not... well, it will still be better than what we had before. I should post some before and after pictures when we're finished.
